That's a good question; depends on what you're looking for. Something to get you amped for a climb, or something mellow for blending in with the scenery?

I'd put Neil Young forth for just about any road trip.

Reggae Roulette:

Get a rotation of about five Bob Marley songs, and just play them on sample for that drive through the San Joaquin Valley. Keep a loaded pistol in the console between the driver and the passenger. See who shoots himself first.

MC 900 Foot Jesus -- Welcome to My Dream

swervedriver -- first 2 albums

fIrehose/minutemen (plenty to choose from)

New Grass Revival (if ya go for the high lonesome sound)

Elvis Costello -- first several albums (up through Imperial Bedroom)

Black Keys

Magnetic Fields

The Hold Steady

Velvet Underground

The roulette idea sounds fun. I like car games. :moondance:

I used to roadtrip with an Australian guy whose entire selection of music consisted of Midnight Oil's tapes and cd's, including a bunch of screechy bootlegged recordings from their early days playing in pubs around Australia. It was brutal.

He's lucky there wasn't a gun in the car; I'd have shot HIM.

with so much good music out there its hard to narrow it down... I tend to just listen to what ever I am in the mood for or stoked on at the moment...

a few staples for me though:

motorcycle diaries movie soundtrack

gorecki's 3rd

cash live @ san quentin (the complete recording)

mos def black on both sides

blackalicious nia

long hauls are also a great time to catch up on your "reading"... books on CD/mp3 are a great idea

And if your ghetto sled doesnt have a plasma yet :mistat: you can always do the ac adaptar in the cig lighter + a lap top... nothing like memorizing the moves to cryo by watching higher ground over and over on the drive up :laf:
