House votes in favor of Wild Sky wilderness in Washington 10:06 AM PDT on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 Associated Press Mark Lawler / Washington Wilderness Coalition Merchant Peak, above Eagle Lake, is one of several spectacular peaks that crown the Sky Peaks Wilderness proposal. WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. House voted Tuesday to create the Wild Sky wilderness in Washington state. The bill sponsored by Congressman Rick Larsen creates the first new wilderness area in Washington state in more than 20 years. A companion bill sponsored by Senator Patty Murray has been approved three times in recent years by the Senate, but it never reached a vote before on the House floor. The wilderness vote would ban development in an area that includes habitat for bears, bald eagles and other wildlife, as well as hiking trails. It had majority support for years, but there was some asshole chairman from Tex-ass or somewhere who continuously blocked it based on his "principles". The bill, sponsored by Washington Congressman Rick Larsen, designates 167 square miles of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest of Washington state as wilderness and is the first new wilderness area in Washington state in more than 20 years. The Wild Sky Wilderness proposal would protect 106,000 acres of forests, rivers, valleys and mountains in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Permanent protection of this diverse landscape is important to ensure the ecological future of fish and wildlife throughout the region, to safeguard the world-class recreational opportunities and to bolster the economies of local communities. However, this bill may affect Jack's Pass and the current snowplowing going on for the inholders of Galena. Don't know what will happen in the summer if a gate goes up...or if there will be a gate. Well if you were to drive between the two climbing spots you might find Baring. If you were to look it up you could come up with the highway #, but you need a little work. The bill should affect none of these things. The valley bottom corridors of the Beckler and NF Sky are excluded from it. Access to the area itself takes some doing and is unlikely to get much easier...to the eventual dismay of those who confuse a wilderness with a recreational backpackers paradise. There is no Index Galena road beyond the 6 mile mark, that's the problem. And b/c it most likely will not be able to be rebuilt in the same spot, it may need to move up the moutain. Right before the bill got passed, the boundery line was moved again in order to make a buffer for the possibility of the road moving higher. After the environmental impact study, we'll know if that boundery moved enough. The next meeting I go to is May 1, during which we will also discuss the Beckler road improvement/rebuilding possibilities. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
archenemy Posted April 18, 2007 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Oh, and there is already a gate, it just isn't used much. Current snowplowing is over. Past snowplowing was minimal--there is simply no where to put the snow on certain parts of the road. I think it is important for people to know that this road is often very unsafe if not impassable and should not be taken before checking with someone who has been on it recently.
