Letters to the Editor

HATRED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bush naysayers want gas prices to go higher

In response to Robert Cummins' letter of Friday, he is just like most liberals hoping gas prices do go up to have a better chance of the liberals winning the Senate and the House in November.

Well, the gas prices are going down, the unemployment rate is low and going down, and the Dow is nearing an all-time high. Insurgents, who Cummins probably calls freedom fighters, are being caught on a daily basis.

Bush haters actually wish for higher gas prices, a poor economy and to not capture Osama bid Laden before the election.

It's a shame to be blinded by hatred.

I don't want gas prices to go up for the midterms, i want them to go up so people will stop buying stupid suv's and giant trucks because they think they look cool. also, i think american gas prices should be based upon a free and fair balanced global standard, insted of being swayed by american business interest (protected by our military). people call for globalization and free trade when really all they want is money at the exploitation of people they will never see or hear from. if this were to happen our gas prices would go up, so i am in favor of that as a wake up call to all the people out there who have no idea where their gas comes from or why they are paying the prices they do. i bet mr Pininich drives a tahoe.

am i a part of your "they" america haters? and peter, what do you not understand? i think we get a pretty good price on oil because of how we militarily treat countries in the middle east to secure american business in the region to those sources of oil. have you ever bought gas in canada, or europe, it is crazy there, it is a discrepancy that i think people should look into before they complain. maybe you understood that part of my argument though, to explain the rest, i was making fun of usless suv's. grin.gif

I'm not sure why you thought of me, as the thing that amazes me the most about the public's response to gasoline prices is the fact that people are positively - stunned - when prices increase as supply diminishes relative to demand. Miles driven per-capita increase in the spring, decline in the fall. Happens every year. Toss in some formulation changes that put a minor dent in refineries' ability to deliver fuel that satisfies local regulatory requirements, and you tighten things still further. Happens every year, but the moronosphere reacts with disbelief and outrage, and in the case of the recent price declines, no small number of conspiracy theories.

There was also the fact that there was quite a significant geopolitical and climatological risk premium built into this summers prices, not to mention the impact of the massive ethanol-subsidy-cluster/MBTA-phaseout that both the refining industry and the ethanol producers were suprisingly ill-prepared for. The only thing that surprised me was that prices didn't go higher.

FWIW every country in the world pays the same price for the same grade of crude, and the gas-price differential simply reflects additional taxes in the case of higher prices, or lower taxes and/or subsidies in the case of lower prices.

Anyhow - I am hoping that the same masterminds that have uncovered the great gas-price lowering conspiracy can shed some light on the neocon conspiracy that makes the price of air-conditioning units, shorts, and beach-houses rise in the summer, and the price of warm-coats, lift-tickets, and ski-equipment rise in the winter.

Doesn't anyone even click on my link above? Jay I would think the paragraph below the one quoted above tend to suggest this one is wrong?

These are the same people who, when election time rolls around, are lauded as being extremely clever and intelligent and rational human beings who will clearly see through all guile and subterfuge and make the right choices for both their own selves and their nation.....

I think the reality is that human beings are going to continue to burn fossil fuels until they become so scarce and expensive that there no alternative but to use something else, and that whatever consequences this process will bring about are a foregone conclusion.

Every spring before the magic Memorial Day da big gaz companies say that 'Merkins are just not cutting back and driving less so they jack up dem gas price. Now after Labor Day Big Gaz says those same 'Merkins are cutting back on discretionary travel and conserving gas and dats why them gaz prices are going down even with decreased supply and all frm the shut down of da BP field in frozen northern desert called Alaska and those refineries that need seasonal maintenance and that winter mix of higher cost ethanol being added. Wadda wanna bet that gaz prices start heading up on the second Wednesday of November?

jay, i think it is the amount fluctuation that is unusual right now. I paid 2.55 for gas this morning, and just a month ago I paid over $3, same pump. Conspiracy or not, that is a huge fluctuation. What gives? I don't remember the prices for gas dropping so much...supply and demand or supply and gouge?

0 = Consistently Lowest Prices

100 = Consistently Highest Prices.

My hunch is that the prices that you paid were the result of normal seasonal changes in demand, normal tightness in refining capacity with respect to the mandated seasonal blends combined with the abrupt changeover from MBTA to ethanol, higher global demand, and abnormally high geopolitical and atmospheric risk premiums to elevate gas prices this summer.

I've never run a gas station, and don't know anyone who has, but I suspect that they price the fuel that they sell based on what they expect to have to pay to refill their tanks, not so much what they paid for the gas that's in them. With oil supplies tight, the ethanol-conversion induced megacluster, super-tight refining capacity (we actually import quite a bit of our gasoline from Europe and elsewhere to meet demand), and everyone bracing for the possible impact of a bad hurricane season in the gulf and supply disruptions originating from within Iran, Venezuela, or elsewshere - I was kind of surprised that prices didn't hit $4 a gallon. Now that demand is abating due to normal seasonal declines and the big political/atmospheric disasters failed to materialize, I'm not surpised that prices are falling off a cliff. Another factor that might be having an impact is people accepting that high fuel prices are more than a momentary blip, and they are making some lifestyle changes to reduce their consumption a bit.

Anyhow - if you want the real low-down, I'm sure that our resident Socialist Day Trader (aka fear_and_greed) has been feverishly following the petro-markets while putting together a trading strategy that will help him profit from the inevitable decline and collapse of global capitalism, so maybe he'll chime in if he's already taken his profits.
