Maybe I am not a good liberal wanna-be-hippie but I hate it when people always complain about progress in former towns like Boulder. Progress is a part of life. Yeah, it's a wealthier community and I'm real sorry dirty hippies can't afford it any more (sarcasm) but it is a damn fun place and it's pretty. Not to menion it has something now we call an "economy".

I would love to see B-ham become the next boulder. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

"This place is going to be the next Boulder" - a friend visiting Bend in 1992.

Ummm. Yeah. So Boulder isn't paradise. It's yuppiefied. And Bend is nice, but overpriced. But let's compare:

Bend:

Bachelor

Sisters

Jefferson

Smith

Boulder:

Eldora

A-Basin

Loveland

Winter Park/Copper/Breck/Keystone/Vail

Rocky Mountain National Park

Eldo

Boulder Canyon

Flatirons

Golden Cliffs

Clear Creek Canyon

Job market

No comparison.

Yeah, but you add encroaching Denver and the yuppie factor (which is way more of a presence than in bend), you negate about half or more of your boulder list. I agree, bend is getting out of hand as far as sprawl and price, but ill take it over bouder any day- you dont have to fight the denver-ites for all of those lovely rec areas in bend...for now.

Well. Id also take boulder over Seattle any day. Its a great town overall with some of the best planning Ive seen. I wouldnt pass it up right now, I just couldnt afford to buy there, nor would I want to stay for the duration. My gf is there right now working for the nature conservancy and she loves it. She's only supposed to be there for a couple months, but I can already tell that Im going to have to either drag her back, or move out there myself.

The real reason she doesn't want to leave...

niwot's curse

and, guys, don't act like boulder or bend is the only mtn town that's over run with the rich... stating the obvious but the west is loaded with them. If it's got scenery then the rich are buying in and putting up a palace next to a trout stream. In Jackson, the joke is that all the millionaires have been displaced/run out to Pinedale to make room for the billionaires.

ya'll stop this or you'll make me hope i don't get that interview there.

fuck these clowns, good luck on your interview. you'll love living here in co... it's nice not to have to throw your fleece in a flippin' dryer after every outing.

yelrotflmao.gif Ahh Colorado. That Western mindset that bigger is always better. You can have Vail and acres of fun sking with people in Bogners on rather mediocre terrain. It was nice 20 years ago I hear.

It's got some nice parts, and parts I'd like to spend more time. Not my cup of tea right now, but still a fun place. The biggest downside to Boulder (and Colorado) are the idiots that think it's the greatest, most special and unique snowflake place on earth. It's not. There are pleny o' places similar.

Or far superior, like Whistler.

Correct. Vancouver, Banff, Tahoe, Chamonix, the Val Gardena, Jungfraujoch, Taos, Portillo, Huaraz. But Bend isn't one of them. Terrain wise, anway.

Best part about Bend is the lack of Texans.

Or crowds.

And Smith.

When I was there in '84, I saw a couple having sex in the bushes near the creek. Is that considered PC or just 'organic'?

I was there in '84...and I can't remember a fuckin' thing

Yeah, as much as the Coloradians make me laugh with their "our skiing is the best!!" stuff, it doesn't change the fact that Oregon's skiing isn't very good. smile.gif

There are some cool areas here that aren't the mega resorts. I find a-basin pretty fun. Compare to, say, Whistler, however, everything here is child's play.

The skiing itself in Colorado wasn't terrible, but what killed me was the hype-to-terrain ratio. That, and the inconsistent snowfall. Dry powder is great, but if it falls once every three weeks, lands on a wafer-thin base, and either gets blown away or tracked out in less than two hours it's really not all that impressive. Toss in a twitchy, poorly-bonded, depth-hoar and suncrust laden snowpack in the BC and and the suck factor only intensifies.

Despite the skiing, Colorado is a great place to live though.

JayB pretty much nailed it...you get very good days for sure, and there are some great great places to ski, and the snow can be amazing but I'd rather have consistent (normally), if heavier, snow, a much larger base, and the steeper terrain of the PNW.

Well at any rate, there are a lot of fucking awesome places to live, you just have to decide what you're willing to put up with. If I had my choice, I'd want to live near Grand Lake, on the western side of RMNP. Colorado is fucking awesome. Yeah, Denver's(et. al) crowded, but there are so many great places to go and soo much shit to do. Sure a lot of places have been run over with yups, but who cares? Live where you want, drink lots of wine, have sex with your partner often, and spend as much time as humanly possible in the woods.

One of my favorite spots in RMNP is in the Mummy Range. I don't know why I feel compelled to share that.

Whoa. I only got like 3 hours of sleep last night, so I'm disoriented and not as cranky as I should be.

Carry on.
