undermind Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Hey, what climbing knife do you guys prefer? Looking for one with clip-in capabilities like the Petzl Spatha. And also one that you can open with one hand and locks in the open position. I did see a Gerber Chameleon knife in the $45 range, but it's more than double the weight. Any others? Quote
olyclimber Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Interesting question! 1. I like my knives to be sharp, so get a sharp one. 2. When I'm touching my void, I like something that slices through rope like butter. Go with something serrated. 3. That clip-on business is over rated. You can always get one that ties onto a string. 4. The Buck-Whittaker line of knifes are where its at for climbing knifes if you have a knife fetish. They're designed by Peter Whittaker and an entire staff of moutain guides! Quote
chris_w Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I had a friend that bought an expensive knife and it kept opening on him during a climb. I laughed because I bought a $1.99 knife along with a little cord and it works just as good. I think I picked it up at a hunting store. Quote
chirp Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Knives for climbing? Must be minimal and functional. Small blade: Clearing out old webbing wads on raps. Scissors: For first aid, flapper maintenence, tape/nail trimming. Tweezers: For assisted Tick removal All in one small negligible package: (cheap too) Quote
undermind Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 As long as I can get it in pink.. I have no problems finding knives, I only have problems finding clip-in knives I can attach to a biner. Maybe it's overrated, but it's what I need. Quote
Dr_Crash Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Trango shark nut tool. This way when you drop the nut tool you drop the knife too. Besides that slide disadvantage it's much lighter than a regular nut tool and a Spatha. drC Quote

lnunn Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 or try the Trango Piranha Alpine Knife. it weighs less than an oz. and clips to a biner. Quote
kenp Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Buck-Whittaker, clips to a biner, half serrated, locking blade and stays folded when not in use. nice and pointy tip and sharp out if the box. Quote
blue_morph Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Gotta like the new ones from Petzl. You clip it securely into a biner. I have the smaller orange one, its all you need. Quote
selkirk Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Columbia River (CRKT) "Peck" or "Kiss in the Dark". Light, one hand operation, locks open and shut, throw it on a laynard to clip it in, and they're cheaper than the rest :-) Quote
bobinc Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I like the Whittaker ok but it seems bulky and heavy if you just want a knife to cut tat, etc. Plus you get leafletted by the Jesus-freak owner when you get one. Quote

kenp Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I had a spyderco clip-it...very light and compact. I kept it clipped to my shoulder strap. it's somewhere on the Longs pass trail now after it fell off. It did have a laynard hole that I should have tied a cord too as a back up. The buck knife is bigger and heavier, for sure. Quote

Ireneo_Funes Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Go with the old Barlow or Swiss Army knife that you've had since you were 12. Keep it in your pocket. Quote
