turn_one Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 (edited) went up today and our progress was stymied just past the 1st main wash. forest service has the road blocked. road work was supposed to have been complete... Edited May 26, 2005 by mattp Quote
dbb Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 did you get a chance to talk to the ranger station about the road work? Quote
hanman Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I was with Turn One on the ill-fated early season attempt at access, and promptly called the station for info. They didn't have alot to add. We speculate that they may have some machines up there to facilitate the fix, and do not want vandalism, etc... Kind of interesting, I've been going up there for over a decade, and have never been blockaded by concrete- time for that Honda 90 MH Quote
max Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Call me a retard, but this is darrington your talking about? I guess to be even more specific, your talking about Clear Creek road? thanks for the info dave Quote
hanman Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Correct- FS 2060 I believe. Closed ~ 1.5 miles in. Quote
dberdinka Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 In this day and age we should be glad they have the funds and willingness to fix it at all. Quote
Off_White Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 That's the truth, there have been rumbles about closing this road, so I'm happy to hear they're working on fixing it. Quote
robertm Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 How far in is the trail to 3 O Clock ? 3 miles? Quote
Jopa Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 How far in is the trail to 3 O Clock ? 3 miles? about 6 miles Quote
catbirdseat Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 That's the truth, there have been rumbles about closing this road, so I'm happy to hear they're working on fixing it. Presumably the reason for the closure was work in progress, but I was in there on Saturday and there is no evidence whatsoever that they are working on that road. The ranger I spoke to didn't have an explanation for why the road is closed. Quote
dbb Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 is the road drivable beyond the closure or is there still a washout? Quote
catbirdseat Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 (edited) If it were not for a concrete barrier at the five or six mile mark, you could drive it all the way to at least Three O'Clock Rock trailhead (Eightmile Trail). We did that stretch on bicycles and while the road is quite rough, I could see no justification for keeping it closed. Edited April 6, 2005 by catbirdseat Quote
cman Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 I heard that the forest service has deemed the road not safe and in need of repair. when will repair happen? who knows but it may not be this summer. hopefully we can do something to generate some support, you know any congress men or women?, and encourage the FS to open the road back up. i really wanted to do dreamer this summer, 5 miles of biking will just add to the challange. Quote
catbirdseat Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 I once went in to do Dreamer with Ade on a Tuesday, and we encountered no fewer than three other parties on the route, including our own Ken4ord. The bike approach should keep the crowds managable. Quote
mattp Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 We may be able to get the road reopened if we can bump it up their list a bit. Lets do it. WCC Action Alert Quote
cman Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Just printed out my letters. I'll have to convince a few other slackers i know to do the same, espcially since in only took a minute. nice job writing those things up matt. Quote
mattp Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 It looks like we have a winner! The roadway supervisor in the Sedro Wooley office called me to say I could tell folks to stop writing and phoning them about the Darrington road now because they are having a contractor start work on the road repair next week. It still wouldn't hurt to send them a letter - but it would be more like "thank you for maintaining access" as opposed to "we're mad because you closed the road." The Darrington district has been supportive of climbing throughout the years. Lets keep it that way. Quote
mec Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 This is good news. I just put my lettes in the mail yesterday... I love climbing at Darrington, and I am too lazy to hike /bike in 5 miles to climb Dreamer. Quote
lost_arrow Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 mattp - any recent news on the darrington road access? Quote
hanman Posted May 12, 2005 Posted May 12, 2005 The road has been reopened. While still a bit rough, the FS says it is passable. Thanks to all those who wrote, called, or organized efforts for this historic climbing area. MH Quote
Billygoat Posted May 12, 2005 Posted May 12, 2005 It is supposedly open. Ranger told me so yesterday. Quote
hanman Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 We did Total Soul yesterday. The road to 3 Oclock is in great shape. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 Can a regular car make it to the 3 O clock rock TH? Quote
hanman Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 As of last Friday, the road was easily passable by regular car. MH Quote
mattp Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 In fact, the road is much better than Hanman's post would suggest. They did a fantastic job with the repair and, at least as far as the Blueberry Hill or 3:00 Rock trailheads, it is smoother than it was last year. See you up there. Quote
