kurthicks Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 So there I was, 15 miles out of town with the intent of climbing the next 4 days and my car started screaming from the rear axle. w00t is that I though? My christmas present to myself is now a fixed car (taking a week & going to cost me $300+). everyone else has gone home for christmas and I'm stuck. This is so suck. Quote
jordop Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Argghh! exhaust manifold just fell apart on the hwy No power but it sounds pretty tough Quote
JayB Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Get a set of tools and a manual. If you are reasonably competent you can do quite a few repairs yourself and save some $$$. Quote
JayB Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Exhaust manifold on the 3.0 VZE engine might not be that hard to replace. If it's not a gaping hole you can cover it with some of the exhaust system patch deals that they sell at most auto parts stores and defer the pain until the next paycheck... Quote
jordop Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 22RE and no it's not that hard to do, just a pain in arse Quote
JayB Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Maybe while you are replacing the exhaust manifold you may want to consider including the optional 3.0 VZE Engine attachment. That might help address the power issues.... Â Seriously though - how is the 22RE on passes and on the highways? The 3.0 VZE seems weak as hell to me, and the mileage is 19-20mpg tops. "Finally - a truck that combines the fuel efficiency of a mid-80s F250 and the raw, unbridled power of a Tercel...." Good thing for Toyota that their engines seem to last forever. Quote
jordop Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Oh the 22 re is just great, especially when you're runnin with a blown head gasket I'm givin the Yugos a serious run for their money  My truck is basically a CD player with a transfer case Quote
Stemalot Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 just spend $180 on some stupid damn stablizer bars on my jeep...all that Chehalis road and the rest of BC's backcountry truck killer roads...I volunteer you drive the next time we have a trip jordop. hehe Quote
kurthicks Posted December 19, 2004 Author Posted December 19, 2004 well, my car is now at the shop. They won't get it done until Friday, but i did find a partner and will be able to salvage the next 3 days. Quote
catbirdseat Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 The head gasket on my wife's minivan once blew when we didn't have $700 to fix it. I became an mechanic overnight. It took me all weekend, and several trips for parts and tools, but I managed to do the job. I had a terrible sunburn on the gap between my pants and my tee shirt from leaning over the engine in the hot sun. The new gasket held and the car worked great after that. Quote
Sandbag Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Cars are just big holes in the ground in which we throw money... Quote
thelawgoddess Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 my mechanic told me it's going to be $350 for front and rear brake pads. wtf??? that's probably more than a third (or maybe even half ) of what my car is worth! anybody know a cheap place to get brakes done? Quote
Kitergal Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 If it's got testicles or tires it's gonna cause headaches. Quote

Have you tried Les Schwab's? I just got the brakes done (including turning rotors) on my truck for a little over $200. Â Please note that I am definitely biased: I think Schwab's is the best for anything regarding brakes/shocks/tires/alignment. I only wish they did tune-ups and engine work. Quote
ken4ord Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 If it's got testicles or tires it's gonna cause headaches. Â Â Never trust anything that bleeds once a month and doesn't die. Quote

Took my Jeep in because I had a broken stud. In the process of replacing them they left a stud in the brake drum. Had to replace the brakes, drums and pads. And then they had the balls to say it was my fault and they did nothing wrong!!!! Quote
JayB Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Buy the manual and tap into the vast pool of sausage on this site. There's gotta be a guy around that will show you how to replace the pads for a plate full of brownies and an intro to a cute girlfriend. Â For the price - I'm guessing you need to have your rotors worked on or replaced, which will complicate the sausage option somewhat.... Quote

Dan_Harris Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Give me a break / brake CBS. I was short and to the point this time. Cars are money pits though. OK, no more bitching from me. Quote
Kevin_Matlock Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 It amazes me how awestruck people are about cars. "Oh my car is broken... what do I do". FIX THE FREAKING THING!!! I don't have an engineering degree and I do a vast majority of my own work. For the price of a few biners and a few brews you can get some screw drivers/pliers/wrenches/etc and do quite a bit yourself and save tons 'o $$$. Definitely invest in a book on your car if you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground though. Quote
JoshK Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Fixing breaks is probably one of the easiest things you can do on a car...read up and try it yourself. Quote
