The MODERATOR only tangentially identified her, speaking to Cheney of "[his] family's experience ".

Cheney then tiptoed around it with generalities.

Edwards specifically highlighted "GAY DAUGHTER".

Check out the transcripts

Uhm. Is she not gay? Is it wrong to call somebody who is gay, gay? i'm confused. What did he do again that was wrong? confused.gifconfused.gif

I'm with you here, Mr. X. I've seen other commentators make the point that ChucK did, but I think they are wrong. The question asked by Eiffel specifically referred to Cheney's "family situation," and he danced around specific mention of his daughter's status because the REPUBLICAN PARTY has sought to make this a divisive issue in this 2004 campaign year. For Edwards NOT to clarifiy what Cheney's "family situation" was, exactly, would have been to (1) avoid the obvious, (2) cower to the Republicans' manipulative campaign strategy, and (3) allow them to continue to try to have it both ways. I'm not saying the Democrats aren't hypocrites here, too, but the Republicans made this a campaign issue, not Kerry and Edwards.

In my view, he was transparently attempting to drive a wedge between Bush and homophobe voters. What I don't like is the fact that he brought Cheney's daughter into the mix.

I guess you could consider it all fine and proper since I'm sure the homophobe voters find this a very important issue. But even though he's turning the Repub's slimy tactics back on them, it's still slimy.

Gotta do what you gotta do though. I think it was excellent strategy, and though completely disingenuous, Edwards pulled it off brilliantly. But it's still nothing I would be proud of, using the other guy's family members against him.

I don't see how it's sliwmy. The question was how is the republician party treating you because you have a lesbian daughter. That might not have been how she phrased it, but by god that certainly was the question. I'm sure a lot of people weren't exactly sure what the commentator was talking about and Cheney like alawys beat around the bush. Edwards came out and clarified the question and his response. I know it didn't happen often during the debate, but we shouldn't be upset when somebody actually gives an answer to the actual question asked.
