It's a shitty plan anyway, it's too far away from population centers, the terrain is uninteresting, and lifts above treeline will almost never run due to weather hazards. But of course, as was the case with the Cooper Spur proposal, the real money-making comes from all the other shit they want to build, including golf courses and casinos, under the guise of building a "ski resort." Hey, why not shut all the lifts down, then everybody will have to go and gamble. What an asshole. If he wants to make a crapload of money then fine, but he doesn't have to permenantly fuck up the second-highest volcano in the state in the process. Daniel would make a better area then Blackcomb. Run access lifts up from the lower lot past Cathedral Rock and then Heaven. WA could have the best ski areas in the US, but instead we have to listen to all the CO and UT folks clown on our areas. I'm in the minority on this board with these thoughts. think about launching a tour off a lift or ice climbing in May! As an avid picture-taker I am very exited. Aren't there already enough freakin ski areas? Would you really drive 5 hours (without snowbunny traffic) to sit and gamble because of perpetual high winds, when you could be at Whistler in the same amount of time? There are lifts everywhere. Realistically, though, they would have to get permission from Klickitat Co. to build a road in from Glenwood. I know the FS wouldn't allow upgraded roads going in from Trout lake and access through White Swan is too far out of the way, methinks. The scary thing is that the residents of Glenwood might actually push to make this happen since their town really doesn't have any other source of income other than farms and logging. It is so quite, pristine and peaceful on that side of the mountain; I never feel like I'm in the middle of a massive circus. And those damn Indians, how dare they ever consider infringing on our quality of life! This is just one more reason (not like anyone here needs one) we should keep up our 400 year history of Native American abuse and repression. Bivied at Sunrise Camp? Crossed The Klickitat Gorge to Avalanche Valley? Hiked The Ridge of Wonders? Or Bird Creek Meadows? Taken your children up Little Mount Adams as their first mountain climb? The Yakamas are humans...just like you and me. And your (our) guilty anglo conscience does not justify allowing this permanent infringement. I did it with a bunch of Rainier seasonal rangers back in the early 80's when I was digging ditch for the NPS between Nisqually Entrance and Longmire. We bivied in a beautiful meadow ...I think it was called Elysian Field or something. Only bummer was on the way out we ran into some snowmobies that were trespassing in the wilderness. Resort??? If the Yakimas approve the resort who will you be more upset at: MHM, the Yakima tribe, Nixon for giving away federal land, or our country's forefathers for not slaughtering all the Indians? I would hope that it doesn't involve exploiting sacred geology in order for Riley and MHM to fill their pockets. As for Riley and MHM, they are a malignant tumor with a voracious hunger for wilderness areas and big fat multimillion dollar profits. We have seen their complete lack of ethics demonstrated in the Cooper Spur proposal, and this is yet another example of what happens when greediness is combined with capital. Anyway like I said, the ski area will fail and all that will be left will be casinos and middle-of-nowhere golf courses. The consumer base is not there and there already exists a ski area with lifts above timberline, it is called Timberline. And guess what, the Palmer never runs, because here in the northwest there are very few winter bluebird days. But maybe Riley just wants to run the lifts all the time anyway, so some people get killed (name recognition). Finally, I sincerely hope that the Washington State government does absolutely nothing to facilitate or accomodate this plan. The common misconception that tribes have complete authority and sovreignty over their reservation isn't true. There's a lot more to it than that. There will be A LOT of issues related to federal and state oversight of on reservation activities. I predict a long, hard fought battle if Meadows wants to push this forward. Ski in Ski out Casinos!
