i worked for the blm in roseburg several years ago. they bought two of these to max out their budget so it wouldn't be dropped the following year. they didn't tow shit!

worst part about it was how the clear-cut-specialists stood around it, scratching their nuts, admiring that fine piece of american made, gas guzzling machinery. same guys who had the "earth first, we'll log the other planets later" bumper stickers.

Also the larger vehicle allows them to haul personel as well. It actually makes sense to have the Tool driving them around as opposed to some fuckstick in Seattle sporting it. Tho I draw the line at night vision and and satelite internet in the rig.

Whatever!! Larry totally needs sattelite internet, night vision ifrared goggles, sound and voice recording equipment, and a 12 guage assault shotgun with fixed bayonet to bust climbers for loitering in the parking lot without a permit.

That's how government works. Right down to the city level. Seriously.

But the Forest Service in this particular instance believe's that having maxed out their budget on two big suv's is MORE important than maximizing their budget on projects to improve trails.

It's a vicious catch-22 cycle: the Forest Disservice needs bigger and bigger rigs to drive the roads that are becoming more and more in disrepair due to lack of funding for road improvements. Rather than fix the roads, it's cheaper to buy bigger vehicles with more clearance and more power. However, in turn, these bigger vehicles degrade the road faster.

I predict in a few years forestry officials will be driving tanks. grin.gif

You guys don't understand how the Federal gubment's budget and appropriations processes work. They get money for specific activities such as roadbuilding, timber management, recreation, etc. Each of these activities is a seperate line item in the budget. The Timber beasts get their own budget as do the recreation guys or other staff. The decision to buy vehicles usually rests with at a level like program manager or district ranger. They buy whatever fits the need of the staff from that program.

The reason they buy white is they are cheapest, a white Ford is the same color as a white Chevy or Dodge. That saves them from having to paint them all that ugly mint green that we are all used to seeing. You know they all have to have the same appearance. You couldn't have them all driving around in non-matching vehicles. blush.gif
