olyclimber Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Not to mention $$$ down the tubes just to fuel that beast. Quote

Alasdair Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 i've noticed that the new de-forest service vehics are not being painted mint green. what gives? They are saving money. The white paint is cheaper. Quote
larrythellama Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 To tow a trailer larger then 2000lbs you need a truck thatis larger, hence the 3/4 ton suv. Ford gives volume discounts to the tool to purchase these vehicles. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 i worked for the blm in roseburg several years ago. they bought two of these to max out their budget so it wouldn't be dropped the following year. they didn't tow shit! worst part about it was how the clear-cut-specialists stood around it, scratching their nuts, admiring that fine piece of american made, gas guzzling machinery. same guys who had the "earth first, we'll log the other planets later" bumper stickers. larrythellama Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Also the larger vehicle allows them to haul personel as well. It actually makes sense to have the Tool driving them around as opposed to some fuckstick in Seattle sporting it. Tho I draw the line at night vision and and satelite internet in the rig. Quote

Larry totally needs sattelite internet, night vision ifrared goggles, sound and voice recording equipment, and a 12 guage assault shotgun with fixed bayonet to bust climbers for loitering in the parking lot without a permit. DirtyHarry Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Shit Dave we all know enough cool hardworking people who work for the Forest Circus who do actually need and use such a rig. There's no reason they shouldn't convert all the rigs to enviro-diesel though. Quote

Like the 3 FS guys I saw in Colorado. 2 Suburbans and an F250 between them at the trail head, that the each drove individually. Real efficent Quote
specialed Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 I figured all the forest service rigs in Colorado would be Subaru Outbacks. Just to fit in with the locals, you know. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted July 29, 2004 Author Posted July 29, 2004 If they need a REAL truck they should buy crew cab pickups like F350s Quote
Stefan Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 i worked for the blm in roseburg several years ago. they bought two of these to max out their budget so it wouldn't be dropped the following year. That's how government works. Right down to the city level. Seriously. But the Forest Service in this particular instance believe's that having maxed out their budget on two big suv's is MORE important than maximizing their budget on projects to improve trails. Quote
klenke Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 It's a vicious catch-22 cycle: the Forest Disservice needs bigger and bigger rigs to drive the roads that are becoming more and more in disrepair due to lack of funding for road improvements. Rather than fix the roads, it's cheaper to buy bigger vehicles with more clearance and more power. However, in turn, these bigger vehicles degrade the road faster. I predict in a few years forestry officials will be driving tanks. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Stephan, unfortunately the budget is not pooled and shared like that. each division (in this case 'transportation' (or something to that effect)) has they're own budget and the can't give the leftovers to another division Quote

Rather than fix the roads, it's cheaper to buy bigger vehicles with more clearance and more power. You guys don't understand how the Federal gubment's budget and appropriations processes work. They get money for specific activities such as roadbuilding, timber management, recreation, etc. Each of these activities is a seperate line item in the budget. The Timber beasts get their own budget as do the recreation guys or other staff. The decision to buy vehicles usually rests with at a level like program manager or district ranger. They buy whatever fits the need of the staff from that program. The reason they buy white is they are cheapest, a white Ford is the same color as a white Chevy or Dodge. That saves them from having to paint them all that ugly mint green that we are all used to seeing. You know they all have to have the same appearance. You couldn't have them all driving around in non-matching vehicles. Quote
