ania Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 When Gary and I descended Ulrich's Couloir (the next gulley west of the Cascadian Couloir on Mt Stuart), we found this helmet (which shall soon become a hanging flowerpot). Gary was curious how old it might be and asked me to post photos, in case one of the... uh... more experienced people here might recognize it. Sexy, eh? Quote
cracked Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Almost looks like one of the "joe brown" 60's helmets. Quote
CascadeClimber Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Yup. Looks like a Joe Brown. They haven't changed much in three decades. I can't say how old it might be. Looks like this one was a snaffle snack. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 They make great hanging flower pots, I have one that I found at Castle Rock. Quote
tread_tramp Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 (edited) I had one of those Joe Brown helmets. But I didn't buy it till The mid eighties when I retired my MSR Helmet. So it's not necesarilly 60's vintage. In fact Mo Antoine and Joe Brown didn't start producing them till '68. They are pretty heavy lunkers. I think The company is called HB now and they make a much lighter bucket for the noggin. Edited July 12, 2004 by tread_tramp Quote
CascadeClimber Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I think The company is called HB now and they make a much lighter graphite composite bucket for the noggin. Yup. I have one. Carbon fiber: Nice, lightweight bucket. Petzl Ecrin still has the best adjustment system, though. All you ever wanted to know about Joe Brown and then some. Quote
pope Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Joe would never place more than a self-imposed limit of 2 pegs on a pitch preferring to leave harder routes for a later generation. How cool is that? Futuristic thinking frequently comes from the wisdom of a previous generation. Quote

Buy NOW, pay later. Quote
wally Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 youre supposed to crap in the blue bag and carry it out, not crap in your helmet then put it back on Quote

Braumeister Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Looks like the helmets Clint Eastwood's climbing partners were wearing on the Eiger Sanction (cool Clint was wearing a construction-style bucket). If Hollywood is any mark to be relied upon (ha!), then one could assume climbers were using those helmets around the time that movie was made in 1977... Quote
boatskiclimbsail Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Hey! I've got two of those old buckets in yellow They're what I give to partners without helmets, they usually buy a real one after a day of looking like a spaceman: Quote
Jim Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Shit!!! This may be my buddies helmet! About 12 yrs ago we climbed the north ridge. After a long day of waiting behind a group of 4 that would not let us pass we simu climbed past. In fading light he lead up a harder portion of the final wall and took a fall about 25 ft from the top and dislocated his shoulder. Long story short - he had to be helied out, I walked out. Me and another party hauled him to the summit after some fancy rope work. His helmet popped of the back of his pack to who knows where. It was an orange Joe Brown. He's mt biking in CO this week - I tell him about it when he returns. F****** A! Quote

Jim Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Orange/red something like this one. I'll check the photos I have at home of the climb. Thanks. Quote
Lambone Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Question for ania....were you intentionally descending Ulrichs? Quote
sobo Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Question for ania....were you intentionally descending Ulrichs? Hey, ya, that's a good question. Quote
ania Posted July 12, 2004 Author Posted July 12, 2004 Question for ania....were you intentionally descending Ulrichs? Yes. Gary and I had ascended the West Ridge by our own variation. On the summit, we discussed whether to go down the Cascadian or Ulrich's. We'd heard the Cascadian was easier. We knew some CC fellow named ChucK had just descended Ulrich's. We were standing at the top of Ulrich's, and one false summit away from the Cascadian. All that weighed together sent us down Ulrich's. Heck, if you want the whole trip report: http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/ania/Stuart/trip_report.html Shit!!! This may be my buddies helmet! Jim -- we found it pretty far down, almost where the trees begin again. I'd be surprised if it had tumbled that far and not gotten stopped somewhere earlier. But if your buddy remembers what stickers it had on it, this helmet does have two spots where stickers once were. Tell me what shape they were and I'll tell you if they match. I hope he doesn't want me to return my new flowerpot to him, though. Quote
Jim Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Does seem unlikely to bounce that far, but could have been carried by 12 years worth of snow slides. I will rummage for a photo or two this evening. Quote
Rod_Xuereb Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Yep. Definitely a 70-80 ish Joe Brown. It is almost as heavy as my old yellow MSR. I'd retire it but it has saved my noggin so many times it would be rude. Note: I am not superstitious.............Really. Quote
Jim Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Nope. Not my friends helmet. Corrct color but my notes from the day said his went trundling down the glacier side of the peak. Thanks. I suggest geraniums. Quote
Lambone Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Yes. That's cool, adventuresome, I like that! Quote
