Dustin_B Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Is there any problem with bivying in the Timberline parking lot? If so, where do people usually crash before hiking up the south side of Hood? Anyone been up this week? Is there a pretty good snow bridge across the bergschrund still? Thanks Quote
Squid Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 parking lot bivy should be fine- I've never been hassled (except by other climbers). Have fun. Quote
skyclimb Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 There will most definatly be a bridge still. Park in the overnight parking lot, clearly marked. No one will hassle you except for the snow plows, which have a knack for spotting sleeping climbers. They then play the game to see how close they can get to you vehicle. Its all in good fun though Quote
Blake Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I'm probably going to be up there sat night, leaving some time between 12:00 and 2:00 on sunday, when were you going? Is a Sno* Park Permit required for the T-Line lot? Quote
cluck Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Is a Sno* Park Permit required for the T-Line lot? Unfortunately, yes. I've even been ticketed (twice) for not having the stupid thing. Quote
Dan_Harris Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I was just checking out Sno-Park permits. Your WA and my CA permits are ok in Oregon. So if you have a season permit, you are good to go. I was glad to see I don't have to buy a second one. Quote
ryland_moore Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I am heading up tonight at 2am to go solo Leuthold's or Reid HEadwall. See y'alls up there. Nothing like hiking up without a headlamp by moonlight! Quote
Dustin_B Posted April 2, 2004 Author Posted April 2, 2004 Thanks for the info. Do people usually ski off the summit or do they drop down below the bergschrund before they strap up? (I know, "it depends on how good you are...") I've only been up Hood once about 2 years ago and don't remember much past the Hogsback. I'm new to bc this year and I was kind of just assuming we'd drop skis at the Hogsback. We'll make the call for ourselves when we get there, but just wondering what most people do. Thanks Quote
ckouba Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I second Shredder's advice, and would personally recommend lugging to the top. Bring some snacks, hang out and wait for it to warm up, then hit the old chute. If you ski it down til it opens up and then hook skier's left, you can clear the saddle at Hogsback and then ski down skier's left of Crater Rock and through the Devil's Kitchen area. If the schrund is open, you should have enough vert to make the conscious decision to cross above or below it when you make your traverse back to Hogsback from the chute. You avoid the crowd and stairsteps of Pearly Gates, you get the full vert, and you're down in the lot before people you summitted with have cleared Crater Rock. It's awesome! Good luck, be safe and have fun. Chris Quote
gapertimmy Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 is the wind advisory dieing off tonight? We have had gusts at the top of bachelor today around 105mph. maybe you should bring a kite ski instead Quote
Dustin_B Posted April 2, 2004 Author Posted April 2, 2004 Sweet, thanks for the info. I think its going to be a zoo out there this weekend!!!! Quote
ryland_moore Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Wind may keep people at bay! Also, check the avi conditions if you are going to come down WCR if still looking for a ski descent. Quote
fshrgrl Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Thrashador and I got up there about 6:30am this morning, pulled into the climbers parking lot all set to summit with skis, looked at the bullet proof conditions glistening in the sunshine while the car shook violently in the wind and didn't even bother to step outside. I am now at work instead... Quote
cluck Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I am now at work instead... BUMMER! Looks like the conditions will hold for the next several days so maybe you'll have better luck if you try again. Quote
spacely Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 down to SE 10-20 early Saturday...hopefully it will be EARLY Sat.! It doing close to 50 at Silcox right now. ... definitely... gave it a go this morning but got to Silcox and figured another day would be better... I used to bivy in the parking lot for a few hours but there is a lot of activity, especially on the weekend which netted 30 minutes of sleep in 2 hours. Now I rest beforehand and don't try to bivy. Gaper_Jeffy Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 How significant is the impact of wind on the corning of snow? Eg, if it's super windy but the temp is in the 50s does the wind adversly impact corn development? Quote
sketchfest Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 I've been on Hood a number of times when the wind was just flat rocking up till the top or Palmer, then it just stops and everything is calm all the way to the summit. Quote
iain Posted April 3, 2004 Posted April 3, 2004 wow, it is still rocking up there. Average in the 30's, peaks in the 40's straight out of the east. Funky. Quote
