Peter_Puget Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 I calculated my BMI and as usual I am in the overweight zone. I would have to loose a bit over 10lbs just to make it into the very top of the healthy zone. My physique is unfortunately pretty darn unremarkable. I may not be very fit but I am sure I could handle a two day prussick trip pretty easily. So – is the BMI a scare tactic or does the average Amercian have no muscle thus throwing off the averages or should I try to loose weight? Has anyone else calculated their BMI and thought the results goofy? PP Quote
DPS Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 I just calculated mine. I am 'overweight' (25.4). I guess running 50 miles a week, lifting weights and climbing and skiing on the weekends is just not doing it. I hope I don't drop dead of a heart attack. Quote
Dru Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 23.0 limitations of the BMI If you are 6'0" and weigh 225 lbs with a 5% body fat its gonna say you are obese, in all probability... you need to know your body fat % to make it meaningful. Quote
fenderfour Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 I'm Obese!!! (31.5) Running, lifting and all the other fun just isn't paying off. I wonder how many other obese people can move and climb like I do. The only person I know who has ever rated "Helathy" is a friend who is 6' 8" and weighs 220. Even then, he just barely makes it in. I have a friend who works with the Department of Health. I have asked her about the BMI and she told me that on a single use basis without proper interpretation alongside other factors like bodyfat percentage, it is almost useless. Quote
Dru Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 well if that avatar picture is you you look obese too Quote
Bronco Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 Peter: I think being within 10lbs of "healthy" is not bad. If you are really concerned about it, go get your BF level tested. I hear that the old dunk tank is still the best indicator over electrical impedance and calipers. I have no idea where you can get this done. I think BMI is intended for the average Joe to see if he needs to lose a few pounds, not necesarily athletic types who might be carrying more dense muscle mass. Quote
Dru Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 yo iaiaiaiaiaian what's yo BMI there before ya go calling ppl tubby? Quote
Bronco Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 quit making excuses beefcake Ok me and my little brother used to do this, I'll see if I can remember how it goes. I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? And finally, sticks and stones may hurt my bones but names will never hurt me. Not very much anyway... Take it back you bastard! Quote
iain Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 haha! where do I calcuate a bmi, and how does it take into account muscle mass Quote
iain Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 ah found it, 25.1. time to get me some bunless whoppers! Quote
RuMR Posted February 5, 2004 Posted February 5, 2004 I dunno...i'm sitting here looking at J-dawg...he's fat, and his bmi says he's not...so maybe its busted the wrong way!! Quote
cracked Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Shit. between 26 and 27. I used to be thinner. I even outgrew my gorts. I guess I'll never be as cool as RuMR. I like to point out to my skinny friends that when we're cold and miserable my fat will keep we warmer. Quote
layton Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 I have 6% body fat and score at the high end of normal. WTF? Quote
fenderfour Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 My the fat inherit the earth!!!!! BWahahaha!!!! Quote
minx Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 BMI is such nonsense! there are times when i am far more fit than i am right now and have a lot more muscle but still weigh the same. given those conditions my BMI is the same either way. (21.3) i can certainly have a much different % body fat and be less fit and healthy and weight the same. it's just plain dumb! Quote
rr666 Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 BMI is the biggest load of horse shit. They try to make it easy with a single number, but people are not that normal to simplify overweight down to a single number, as calculated from weight and height.... Quote
chucK Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 BMI is a public health, crude first-screen type of thing. No more than that. No need to get worked up over it. Just a cue to ask yourself other questions like what's your BP, cholesterol, exercise habits, etc... If your doctor puts you on some expensive medication because of your BMI alone, get another doctor. Quote
cracked Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 I think they're trying to make the general public feel fat so they get off their asses and do something! Which is good. Focusing on how hard you climb is better than focusing on wether you're 'fat' or not. How hard you climb, after all, is what really counts, right? Quote
fern Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 so in an un-trained individual is the BMI an estimate of or an upper limit of their body fat %? Like if you are a typical inactive person with BMI of 25 does that mean you have about 25% body fat? ... Quote
rr666 Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Maybe we should create a new rating and include BMI and how hard you climb. How about this: BMI * Hardest Sport Redpoint * Hardest Ice Redpoint / Hardest Boouldering Redpoint Quote
fenderfour Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 What about grueling Alpine Epics? Don't they count? 18+ hours hauling a big pack over steep terrain has to amount to something on the new bastardized climber's BMI. Quote
