OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM CLIMBING MAGAZINE

RE: INCIDENT IN JOSHUA TREE

NATIONAL PARK

Carbondale, CO-Yesterday details of an incident and charges involving Climbing magazine editor Jonathan Thesenga and the National Park Service in Joshua Tree National Park first came to the attention of Climbing’s management team.

We immediately undertook action and conducted an internal investigation. Based on the results of those efforts, Climbing magazine this morning terminated Thesenga’s employment effective immediately. A successor will be named later.

For 33 years Climbing’s editorial content has been a constant refrain to climbers to act as environmental stewards. We have encouraged the climbing community to employ minimum impact climbing practices, and have strived as employees and representatives of Climbing and the community to maintain even higher standards for ourselves. Violations of that obligation are dealt with swiftly

and deliberately.

Climbing magazine has supported the Access Fund since its inception in 1989, through financial sponsorship, marketing assistance, and editorial coverage of their efforts. Climbing’s long-time editor, publisher, former owner and current editorial consultant, Michael Kennedy, served as a volunteer on the Access Fund board of directors from 1993 through 2002 and as Access Fund president in 1999 and 2000.

Climbing magazine supported climbing specific efforts of the Conservation Alliance with corporate sponsorship from 1992 through 1998. And more recently, the magazine has supported the Utah Open Lands’ Castleton Tower Preservation Initiative, a community and industry supported effort to save Castle Valley from development. Environmental awareness and activism are the core tenets of Climbing’s philosophy - - past, present and future.

Good ... I'm glad to see they had a backbone and stood up to speak out against that unacceptable bull shit. Maybe now they'll do away with glossy ads and publish some decent articles about something other than the Rockies and the Karakoram!

Any guesses as to who the next Ed. will be? If hiring from within, maybe our state's own Matt Stanley...or Matt Samet...maybe bring back "Editor Emeritus" Michael K? Hmmm--send in your resume now!

I think he was caught up in war fever and was frustrated he couldn't torch something in the Iraqi desert with full approval from the feds. Southern CA is a pale substitute.

See yesterdays report on this site.

I liked the story in today's report about "special agent" Todd Swain busting another park employee for embezzlement. I'm assuming this is the same Todd Swain of Red Rocks and Gunks guidebook fame.

Climbing firing him was good. But... I wonder how he ever made it to 'Editor' and how come they only fired him now? You don't do crap like that on a lark without people at the mag knowing your predisposition right? I mean, it is kind of like hiring the coach at Notre Dame who lied on his resume. Did no one at the magazine bother to check on him or did they turn a blind eye on his aberrant behavior? Or, was this honestly his first offense and they canned him right away before the problem got bigger? I don't know...food for thought.

That NPS blurb doesn't really make clear what he was doing exactly? Lighting pools of white gas on fire? What does that do? Unless is blackens the rock it doesn't do much or any damage.

Today's story about some dude getting busted with 7 lbs of dope in Yellowstone sucked. Poor fuckers up in Cook City, that was probably there whole spring supply right there. Bummer thumbs_down.gif

Johnny Law sez (from here ):

SECTION 2.13 - FIRES

(a) (1) Open campfires are restricted to Government provided grills and are prohibited in backcountry or wilderness areas.

Jeez ED, what kinda lawyer are you gonna make? If a simple guy like myself can type "joshua' and 'fire' into google and find the applicable CFR to answer your Q I really don't see much hope for you. And BTW, have you fixed that 'problem' we talked about last time?

Climb on, Bro! bigdrink.gif
