E-rock Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 God say it ain't so Iain's a DEADHEAD!!!! Quote
freeclimb9 Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 (edited) Edie Brickell did a cover of the Steely Dan tune Showbiz Kids: Does not suck. Pat Boone covering Deep Purple and Ozzy Osbourne does suck. A lot. Edited February 8, 2003 by freeclimb9 Quote

glacierdog Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Why do they have to re-record perfectly good songs... Because covers kick ass! Especially unlikely ones, like NOFX's cover of "All of Me". Lovely, just lovely. Cheers to that. Quote
glacierdog Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 There was also that shitty remake of AC/DC on the Varsity Blues soundtrack. I think it was Sprung Monkey. Can anyone make a puking graemlin? Quote
bobinc Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 JK is right on -- consider Hendrix doing All Along the Watchtower (and also Gloria (vs Van Morrison)) I must beg to differ with Muffy on the best version of My Way -- Sid is excellent, but Killdozer is even better. Also must mention the bangup job the Meat Puppets did with Battle Hymn of the Republic as an encore at a PDX show years ago. Quote
fern Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Sleater Kinney covered Boston's "More than a Feeling". If you can find a copy of it I'll pay you ten bucks for it. mp3 here Quote
E-rock Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Thanks Fern, but I'm not paying for the MP3 (I miss the emoticon that stuck out it's toungue that Muffy was such a fan of). Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 (edited) Thanks Fern, but I'm not paying for the MP3 (I miss the emoticon that stuck out it's toungue that Muffy was such a fan of). It's free, ding-dong. Just click on the link! Pretty lo-fi, though ... Edited February 7, 2003 by Dr_Flash_Amazing Quote
E-rock Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 I know. I was just letting Fern know that my offer is null and void unless it's wax, yo. Unfortuneately my sound card doesn't work and I can't find a driver for it. Quote
fern Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 wasn't asking for $$$ anyways. I did find one site which claimed you could donate your $10 directly to the band in return for the mp3 download. pretty fishy if you ask me. Quote
E-rock Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 How about this one. Firehose, "Walkin' the Cow". But I don't know who did the original (have never even heard it) I just know that it's a cover. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 For those who liked the movie Grease, Less Than Jake covered the entire soundtrack. Quote
Dru Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Devo Covering Hendrix are you experienced and Stones satisfaction Residents' Cover of John Phillip Sousa (one side of album) and Hank Williams (other side of album) with country disco mix of Kaw-Liga. Clawhammer cover of entire Devo album Are We Not Men... Boney M covering Neil Young Heart of Gold with synthesized harmonica noises!!!! Quote
North_by_Northwest Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Jane's Addiction cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" beats the original on any plane. You can understand more of the words AND it is more in tune to the idea of the song. Way more tortured and evil-and liking it than the Stones. Quote
bobinc Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Good call on fIREHOSE They also did outstanding versions of Superchunk: Slack Motherf***** and (I think) Public Enemy: Sophisticated Bitch. And how about Elvis Costello's "Ship of Fools"? Quote
chucK Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Dancing in the streets - Fred Frith California Uber Alles - Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy Dr. Wu - Minutemen Yu Gung - Pussy Galore Revolution - Mudhoney Search and Destroy - Red Hot Chili Peppers James Brown at the Apollo - Residents Lawman - Royal Trux Louie Louie - Black Flag Kotton Krown - Two Nice Girls Girl U Want - Superchunk Simpson's Theme - Sonic Youth Quote
Off_White Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 I used to have a cover of Jenny (867-5309) that kicked ass, but I can't think of who did it. Fitz of Depression did a great version, but don't know if thats the one you're thinking of. I think most covers that don't re-interpret the song suck. You've got to add something to it, not just display your wish to be the original artist. To that end, The Gourds doing their bluegrass version of Gin & Juice remains one of my favorites. Just today I heard a good version of Like A Rolling Stone slopped up as only the Replacements can do it. Just the other night in Portland Sleater-Kinney did a brilliant version of Fortunate Son. Quote
chucK Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 What about Run-DMC's "Walk this Way" that was cool ? I bet even Tarsk likes that one. Quote

ScottP Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 William Shatner doing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds has to be one of the more original covers (if that's possible) that I have ever heard. Or Leonard Nimoy's hatchet job of CCR's Proud Mary. Quote
Roger Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Jane's Addiction cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" beats the original on any plane. Agreed - that's one of my favorite covers ever. PLUS, you get the double-cover-bonus of the segue from their version of VU's "rock and roll..." Now I've gotta go put that disc on. Other covers that rawk: Supersuckers covering just about anything... like "Get it On" by Turbonegro or even Madonna's "Burning Up." Dinosaur Jr.'s version of "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure. On a mellower note, the Cowboy Junkies' cover of "Sweet Jane" is a classic... Quote
ChrisT Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 On a mellower note, the Cowboy Junkies' cover of "Sweet Jane" is a classic... I like that version as well...almost as much as the original by Lou Reed Quote

ChrisT Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Really?!?! I LOVE Bjork but I've never heard those two... Quote
