  1. Is that a Little Black Book I see in Santa Beckey's hands?? -L
  2. This simply isn't the black-and-white issue that you make it. Support which rangers? Climbing or backcountry? Are any of them requesting additional funding? And the rate of inflation is an average. That means some prices increase at a faster rate and some at a slower rate. Computing power is less expensive now that ten years ago. Gas production is more efficient. Big Oil is not losing money on gasoline sales in this country. MORA went almost 100 years charging $5 to enter and nothing to climb. What has changed so radically in the last ten? The only thing that seems to get consistently bigger and more expensive is our bloated goverment. I'd really like to be protected from myself a little less. Clickit or Ticket? We spent how much of our declining state tax revenue in this state on that ridiculous program?? Ugh.
  3. I'm fairly sure that the rate of inflation has been less than an aggregate 100% since the climbing fee was first implemented. I was just kidding about those proceeds being used to buy land, but I do want to make the point that they are talking about using the increased revenue to expand services, not maintain the status quo. I'd rather see the millions spent on 1000 acres of old-growth than a lot of other things.
  4. Well at least we know the real reason for the climbing fee increase now. -L
  5. Snowshoes found in a parking lot in the last five days. If they're yours you'll know when, where, and what. -Loren
  6. Two mixed pitches in a steady downpour of Cascade Liquid Sunshine amidst two feet of lovely Cascade Cement. Oh-well, at least it was climbing.
  7. It's back. Just when we all thought it had drifted off to the thread graveyard... In the moving belayer scenario, the best case is that s/he bottoms out against the draw/biner. The worst case is a full-on faceplant into the rock/ice. In the worst case I suspect there is a decent chance of the belayer momentarily shirking belay duty in the name of staying pretty, checking for damage afterward, and/or losing consciousness. Use judgement and be thankful for friction.
  8. It's currently $15 for a one-time. I read here that the proposal is to double it to $30. Maybe the increase will be used to design the shuttle system from Longmire that they've talked about requiring climbers to use.
  9. Seriously? I pay more to go above 10000 or onto a glacier so a ranger can spend more time sitting at a desk? People complain about RMI, too. Did they mention their plan for that? Please tell me this is a troll.
  10. You forgot: Is a mega-hottie, making all my dirtbag climber-dude friends jealous *and* totally enamoured of me: She isn't going fall for any of said dirtbag climber-dudes. But that's just speculation. What would a guy who just had his 11th wedding anniversary know?
  11. How about charge $500/night and provide bell-hop service for my gear to Muir, an attendant in the shitter, hot tubs at all high camps, and a 1:1 ranger-climber ratio so a ranger can hold my hand from the shitter to the hot tub and tuck me into bed? It's a volcano in a national park. Can't we let it be wild????? I wasn't at the meeting, but did they ask if climbers *want* a higher level of service? -L
  12. I hereby nominate this thread as the Super-Gaper Thread of the Year.
  13. I predict it will be skied in the next 18 months. But I could be wrong.
  14. I just ordered a Dell Ultrasharp 2000FP for the wife. Shut up! It is for her! So what if I had my initials engraved on it. I want Santa to bring me: 1. Some new skis and skins (not that that would help my skiing at all). 2. A nice balance of snow and ice for the winter season. 3. Some fine, fat, blue ice somewhere within a six hour drive and a two hour approach. Santa, can you say Drury? 4. The continued understanding of my wife for me wanting to spend large amounts of my free time wet, cold, and scared in the company of odiferous men (DBB- you're last in line next time). 5. Ditto for my wife's parents. 6. A snowplow visiting the Phair Creek road on a regular basis. 7. A few more days of skiing with my oldest daughter, now 5. 8. Business results like the last half of this year.
  15. Tim, those freshiez look a little damp at the moment. But that only qualifies it more as a Northwest Winter Scene.
  16. That's funny. I thought pitches 2 and 10 looked remarkably similar.
  17. Crystal: Timberline: Mission Ridge: Wet snow, flat light, high wind, zero vis: Winter at last.
  18. I couldn't resist. Micron sucks.
  19. Duuude- you should have gotten a Dell! -L
  20. One of a kind, so far: INFJ 33, 56, 44, 22
  21. That pretty much changes the nature of No Deductible. I wonder if this practice will someday be regarded like chipping holds on rock routes. But I guess trapsing all over those trails in crampons has a significant effect on the runoff pattern, too.
  22. Today.. Morning fog patches. Otherwise cloudy with 70 percent chance of showers late in the day afternoon. Snow level 900 metres. High 5. Tonight.. Cloudy with 70 percent chance of showers. Snow level 800 metres. Low 2. Tuesday.. Cloudy with 70 percent chance of showers. Snow level rising to 1200 metres by afternoon. Wind becoming south 30 km/h. High 7. Wednesday.. Cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers. Low 2. High 6. Thursday.. Cloudy with showers. Low 4. High 8. Friday.. Rain. Low 4. High 8. WTF? That's 47F on Friday?? From December 15, 2001:
