Skiing at Zermatt a few years ago I watched a Swiss army group ski away from the gondolas and up Monte Rosa. Just from watching that I decided that mandatory military service for everybody could be fun. I'd love to be told to do training exercises like that. I dislike the Walmart of outdoor shopping (REI). Nevertheless I do get into situations where they are the only option. Once I needed freeze dried food for a long bc ski trip. I had to get it that day. No problem I figure. I'd just go to Outdoor and More and pick some up. They had none, but REI was close. I wet there, walked in, and grabbed what I wanted. At the check out the cashier as me, "Are you an REI member?" I said no. Then I got a long speech about how I really should join. In the end I told the woman, "I want to buy this food. I need it now and you are the only quick source, but I hate REI and never want to join. That made the rest of the transaction go quickly and smoothly.

I know none of this for a fact, but I hear you don't just eat the Amanita muscaria. There is some kind of processing one does before eating them. Carving out the white caps or something. Correctly identifying the psylocybin variety is much safer. Chanterelles, oyster mushrooms, and others taste good with dinner. Good ID skills are a must, but if you do that right you just get a nice dinner and don't have to plan on further entertainment.

I saw Dave Reichert at the 4th of July parade in Carnation a couple years back. I was at the parade again this 4th and Dave was nowhere to be found. If he really cared he would have showed up to wave at the crowd and thank them for their support.

I've thought a little more about the event I remember. I believe it was June. Rapid warm weather led to a lot of slides. Helicopters we saw hovered near gullies leading down to Price Lake. Due to safety issues they couldn't spend much time. It ended up being months later before they spotted the remains of the two climbers.

I was at Price Lake around 1984. We ran into a group searching for 2 climbers in their group. The two while climbing on the N Ridge were hit by avalanche/serac fall. The group looked for their friends and down climbed/rappelled from the N ridge to Price Lake. After talking to the folks who thought we were search and rescue and observing conditions we ditched our plans for the Price Glacier. We sat and watched the real search and rescue help the survivors out. They flew helicopters around the cliffs above Price Lake. Months later I heard they snagged the bodies of the two fellows. I don't remember names.
