Despite the lack of rain last year the average temps were low. So there was good ice climbing but crappy skiing. Word to ice climbers Get some boards this year!

Skied up Mt. Snoqualmie today. Weather was great and last weekends high freezing levels have made a nice base to ski on. We got to the summit about noon and skied off the south side. There was about 8" of pow on top of a crust. We ran into clouds about half way down and that made navigation through cliff bands tricky. We avoided the waterfall section at the bottom as we didn't think there was enough snow yet. Nice skiing!!! Now I'm thirsty

I don't mind repeating myself DO NOT TELE telemark skiing is the sport of the antichrist and Osama Bin Laden. Seriously though, I believe manufacturers are going to introduce a new tele norm that will allow normal boots to fit into tele bindings. But that's a year or two out. I think if you already alpine ski and snowboard then choose between a split board or an AT set up. Just think of all the lift tickets you won't have to buy to learn to tele. I know people who use climbing boots in their snowboard set up. I would say that if the tours you are doing involves a lot of flat ground then skis will always be faster than a slit board. But in the big picture they won't be that much faster. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: AlpineK ]

You sure love the Alki Sean. Maybe we should all go there so we can either see where it's at or be able to mock you everytime you bring up the Alki in the future. Didn't someone say something about somewhere near South Center though? Not that I'm against the Alki

Get a split board!

On a shorter trip you can deal with the extra weight of AT boots, but if I were going to Denali and planning on climbing and using skis only for approach then climbing boots are the way to go. If Denali is a long term goal you will have plenty of time to buy both, but you sound mostly interested in sliding right now.

I think Dan is the evil anti-caveman

The way you ask the question is confusing. If I were climbing Denali I would bring climbing boots and crappy skis. If I went there to ski above the 14,000' camp I would bring rando boots. It sounds like you have enough interest in skiing that Rando boots are what you want. I would go with the Dynafit boots. They're better for walking.

I'm not sure that I would be happy with someone clipping all my pro to pass me but things are a little different in Europe. Americans are used to having a lot of space while in Europe most people live in tight quarters where lack of personal space is the norm.

They did pull Rats thread on Dan Larson. I'm really sorry I missed that

If you lived in England you could put on a tutu and hunt them.

Why haven't you considered getting one of them Burton split boards? They look pretty nice and you already know how to snowboard. Also I hear since they are so wide they have great floatation while going uphill in pow.

Dude those railroad bolts (or Quary) give Index some of its charm. The bolts at the top of the 5.6 crack, while not being an aesthetic anchor, work just fine. You gym boys sure are picky. Index is a great place where people can hang pigs from routes and grease cracks. One time I saw Kit Lewis firing his gun in the air there. Thats the kind of place Index is. So if you want beautiful lycra clad climbing glitterati(sp?) and beautiful anchors move to Boulder or somewhere similar. As to the whole "Rock Cop" thread. I think the topic should have been left up. Daryl chose to identify himself and, as part of the bolters at Index in the 80's, he stands on shaky moral ground to be policing others actions.

You know it Eddy!! But the boards look cool, your going to have to fork out some big bucks for an all new tele set up anyway(boots+bindings+skis+skins), and while you are right that skis would be faster, those split boards seem like they would be a lot faster and easier to use than snowshoe/board combo. Also if you can snowboard but not tele you don't have to learn anything new. I'm just suggesting options that may not have been considered. If I snowboarded I would want one! I saw one in real life. I guess they work, but you should remember that about 50% of the fatalities in avalanches are due to hitting trees, rocks or falling off cliffs.

There are coyotes in Bellevue. I've seen em running across 148th at night. They're pretty smart and they adapt well to diferent environments, so I guess they might not howl when they know there are so many city folks around.

Skied up to the NE ridge of Chair and yoyoed the slopes above Source lake. 2' of nice powder. It sucked breaking trail from the car, but it ruled when we skied it. Avy conditions seemed safe enough when we were there.

I know a number of people that think that any form of TR is chest beating. I think it can be nice to have info out there for people to take advantage of. Especially when it comes to info on an ephemeral medium like ice or snow. Crowds are going to occure on routes that are moderate in difficulty, easy to aproach, and have a lot of stars in the guide book. If you work hard and are willing to go explore you can still have a nice crowd free experience. Also I think lying about a route to someone is bullshit. If you want to keep it to yourself don't tell anyone.

I was at Baker on Sunday with a couple friends. I was busy conquering the slopes, but suddenly I stoped to admire my two buddies on tele gear. With a sudden flash of divine inspiration I was finally able to see the true harmony with which they skied. I feel I must humbely ask AYCE for forgiveness for my bad attitude and poor choice of gear. My friend Comradeja was one of the tele skiers. It is truely inspirational to see a person living in harmony with his skis, the environment, and god.
