Skiing is an aspect of climbing, and I'm all for it, but it's hardly the main focus of this site. Now if somebody went for a tumble skiing down Liberty Ridge I bet there would be a big brouhaha. How come you choose a style of skiing that pretty much makes you a granola chewing whiny ass vegan when you could be on AT gear and be a hot rippin chick? (if you are a female)

I think that there are a number of mountain ranges that could beat the Cascades hands down at any aspect of climbing. Colorado has better and a lot more rock. The Canadian Rockies have (or had ) better alpine ice and still have world class winter ice. What the PNW has is mountains that feel like a classic alpine environment that are within a reasonable distance of a major population center full of employment opportunities that are better than working for shit pay in a resort town. Also climbing here can be an adventure (bushwack) right from the car, which in my opinion adds to the alure of the Cascades.

If there's one thing I've learned from internet bbs posting it's that nobody is really capable of ignoring someone who pisses them off.

Judging by some of the gay ass hats I see all the time at ski areas I expect these things to be the rage at ski areas next season. What the fuck is up with this helmet thing for kids anyway. I started skiing at a young age and I never I repeat never wore a helmet. What is wrong with parents these days? The world's a tough place; if you pad everything for your kid they're going to get soft.

Every few years I have to update my industrial first aid certificate. The class is always taught by a firefighter, and one of the subjects that always comes up is how people involved with accidents or rescues deal with the mental stress it puts on them. One way that a couple different instructors pointed out is to make jokes and crass comments about the accident/victim. It's not that they don't care it's just that it is a way of dealing with seeing some fucked up shit on a regular basis. Climbers are in this boat too. I'm sure accident reports remind people that something similar could happen to them, and whether conciously or subconciously they need to deal with it. Sure it's a public forum, so we need to have some respect to the victim/family. I just figure that for every accident there needs to be two threads one respectful one on the climbers board and the other one in spray.

If you hike up to Goose Egg and find somebody ahead of you on your chosen route run away or at least pick another route far from them.

Ok let me tell you what I really think. Anyone who thinks there's a mounties lodge in the Icicle is a dumbfuck The mounties are the epic masters. I was in the mounties but I quit them a long time ago. My first expeience climb was with a leader who couldn't climb 5.2 (seriously) and refused to give up the lead. We spent an extra night out because of that idiot. My main climbing partner when I was starting out took the mounties class and on an experience climb on Adams they lost 1 tent and spent an extra night out. Just last year I helped rescue some mountie dude who fell on a 5.4 at the Tieton. I've heard thousands of other mountie epics. Rudy's comments earlier in this thread are spot on. The idea that someone who's been through the basic course the year before instructing new climbers is fucking stupid. The mounties have a large role in climbing history around here, but they hopefully have next to no role in the future of NW climbing. Death to the uber bureaucratic climbing club.
