Actually, a neighbor clued me into a nearly effortless way of getting under sidwalks. You take some PVC, cap it with a cap that has a very small hole in it, then glue a component on the end that will screw on a garden hose. You have a self-made water pic that drills under sidewalks like butter. The PVC section I used was 8' long.

Friday night: learned that I had a busted water pipe leading from the meter to the house. Spent hours hunting for a plumber who would work on Super Bowl Weekend. Saturday: dug a new trench for new water main; Sunday: complete trench, lay pipe, backfill.

The corrections is indeed a funny book. I heard an interview with Franzen on Fresh Air and he came off sounding like a super pompous prick. He went so far as to say that he was disappointed that Oprah picked his book because he wanted to appeal to a more high-brow crowd. I enjoyed it nonetheless. Ever read "Infinite Jest"? Its sort of a similar style. I love martin amis's stuff.

Nor do I ever want to test one again. No, I put a screamer on it because I had planned on running it out to the top of the pitch. The ice itself at that point was pretty solid.
