Maybe Jon and Tim could set it up to automatically email us when we're "featured", so we can enjoy our fame?

At least he's getting some very much needed sun.

Maybe AlpineK should be the moderator for the Personal Web Pages, to make sure no one beats his/her chest....

Man or woman??? Neither?

Wow, cool, good job! Funny thing about snowlevels around Lake Colchuck. I've been up there twice in winter, and there is hardly ever any snow. I was up there 2 years ago near the end of January, in the average snow year. There was only about 2 feet of snow. One week ago, I was up on Wedge mtn, at the east end of Icicle Canyon. So you'd figure there'd be even less snow than at Colchuck. But at the equivalent elevation, there was probably 5 feet of snow. What gives?? How does that glacier survive?

How come you get to fly around in a chopper and take pictures?

The downhill course video allison mentioned started with the skier jumping out of a helicopter, because that's what it's like when you start down that 75 degree first pitch !! absolutely ridiculous!

I just wish someone walked on the set as they were filming the news segment, and started yelling someting like "what the fuck, are you guys demented dis-illusioned morons? You could play bridge from a hospital bed, etc... etc....." The 75 degree thing was driving me nuts too. These guys have no clue whatsoever. Also morons

Surpise Lake be 4 miles south of highway 2, just west of where you head up to Scenic hot springs. There be lots of big boulders up there. I suspect they'd be kind of mossy in summer, seen as they're kind of in a deep valley. But when covered in 7 feet of snow, they make for fun skiing.

I saw news segment yesterday about bridge as an Olympic sport. It would be completely laughable, if they weren't so serious about it. Like, people are totally serious about trying to get bridge to be an olympic sport. WTF??? They even had several people proclaim it definitely to be a sport. Even the guy doing the news segment called it a sport. They were talking about it, because the bridge World Cup is going on in Salt Lake right now, and its somehow involved with the Olympics. Canada won the men's team competition (woohoo!)

A couple of weeks ago they were checking everyone for chains on the way up to stevens pass. It was about a 30 minute wait to get checked. Lots of 4x4's got turned around. My friend in another 4x4 truck was hoping they'd ask him "Do you have chains", in which case, he'd say yes, because he's got some at home for his wife's car. But they asked "Are you carrying chains", so he said no and had to turn around. Next time he'll carry the car chains with him. Stupid thing is, the road conditions were fine.

Band of brothers marching together, heads held high in all kinds of weather. With fiery blasts our roaring rockets flybeyond the earth, beyond the skies. At the sight of Robin take your standwith the gallant leader of our band.Send a joyous shout throughout the landfor Rocket Robin Hood! Band of brothers shoulder to shoulder, none dare defy us. When you carry it, what camera gear do you carry>

quote: Originally posted by freeclimb9: Yashica T4 Actually, the T4 doesn't allow you to set manual exposure, or use exposure compensation, which is a big problem for snow & ice photos. I switched to using print film in that camera because of this - you just can't get consistent results with slide film if you don't have exposure control (I know, I could carry some ND filters, etc...). Otherwise, the T4 does take great photos, but now I have mostly switched over to using a digicam for 'point-n-shoot' stuff. Although I can't make enlargements to the same degree as the T4, I get better exposures, and mostly these pictures are for the web anyway. If I decide to lug around a big camera, I use a Mamiya 7 medium format. It isn't any heavier that most modern motorized 35mm SLR's (about 3LBS), but takes pictures that put 35mm to shame of course. Also since its a rangefinder, you can often take handheld pics at shutter speeds where you'd need a tripod for an SLR. In this camera I usually use Kodak E100VS film. -

Just a heads up to anyone thinking of heading up to highway 20 for some climbing. You might want to call ahead, because the highway is currently closed between Newhalem and Diablo (unless you be a Diablo resident) due to avalanche danger. The ranger I talked to yesterday did not know when it was scheduled to reopen. Unfortunately, this isn't mentioned on the DOT information line, or on any park service phone recordings, so you'd have to talk to a real person to find out. grrrr....You could drive around the sign, it's not gated or anything, but there's probably a good chance you'll get caught (and last time I violated a road closure, I got a $100 fine, so we didn't bother). So dbb and I checked out Cascade River rd instead. It is plowed to somewhere between the 6 and 7 mile mark. There's about 2 feet of snow beyond. Shortly thereafter, there are several trees across the road, and once you reach the Lookout Mtn trailhead (about 1/4 mile from the end of the plowed road), there is a tree that is big enough to prevent snowmobile access. So if you were, say, going to try to ski the N Face of Buckner , you'd have about 16 miles on foot before reaching the Cascade Pass parking lot.

Any current information won't be relevant on Feb 22. (except maybe to say the snowpack is deep) You can follow what the snowpack is doing day by day, by reading the avie forecast:http://www.nwac.noaa.gov/nw01000.htm
