[TR] Winchester Lookout - The long way 1/3/2011
cdmike112 replied to JasonG's topic in North Cascades
Has anyone been up to the lookout this season, is it still open in the winter, and what is the twin lakes road like up to the trailhead? Is it fairly easy to snowmobile up the road? -

Hey Adam its Mike, I will be in Leavenworth the next couple of days, I plan on getting out to see what is in and I will let you know.
-
Yes it is possible to set up a top rope on the flow to the far right, it is probably easier to lead the climb and then set an anchor, there are several bomber trees to do so. There does not look like there is an easy way to the top of the rest of the routes with out leading them.
-
I went back up on Monday and took some pics, enjoy.
-
Get a BD ATC guide or something similar that allows you to belay directly off of the anchor and provides the added security of auto-locking.

Looks like an adventure, nice.

I somehow forgot my camera but have some footage of the cirque from my head cam. Here is a link to footage. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100172206458943&saved#!/photo.php?v=10100172202067743&set=vb.27204921&type=2&permPage=1 and a close up of one of the moderate ice lines. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100172206458943&saved#!/photo.php?v=10100172206458943&set=vb.27204921&type=2&permPage=1 There is a another moderate line in the center of the cirque, looks like WI3 also, it looks like there is no decent, you would have to build an anchor and rap.

Hiked up to Lake Angeles today, there are several ice climbs that are in and overall in pretty good condition. I climbed a 100ft section of WI3 and continued up the drainage to the ridge line. There looks like there are several mixed lines to also be had.

Went up to lake angeles in the olympics today, ice was good, there are several lines that are in and good to go. Unfortunately I did not have a camera. I did have my head camera and am working on uploading some footage.
-
Looking to get out on some ice, let me know if interested. I was thinking something WI3ish in the alpental area or leavenworth.
-
If you are open anytime between now and the 28th, I would like to get out and climb Oompa Loompa.
-
