Holy Shit!

I worked up at the mountain last Winter and always got a kick out of the report. My personal favorite is "Packed Powder". I think all areas fudge a bit on the reports in an effort to bring in the $.

I am not a huge fan of regulations. Especially when it comes to outdoor pursuits. I do think that there are times when ideas should be strongly urged. Such as the use of PLBs/MLUs on climbs such as Rainer in Winter or Hood or what have you. I see this as being similar to the Mt Baker Ski Area regs for heading out on the Arm. Beacon,Shovel,Probe, Partner and Knowledge of conditions and Terrain. I disagree with not initiating a rescue lacking a PLB/MLU. As a rescuer I feel that anyone in need of help deserves the help. What I think the MLU/PLB offers is an increased chance of rescue and hopefully more positive outcomes.

I can see the logic in this post and would second it both from the climbers stand point as well as that of a fellow rescuer.

The glorious Mountain Loop Highway - Granite Falls, Washington. I grew up in Verlot and I think the Mountain Loop is the Shiznit! Let's go Darin!

I have heard debates within the rescue community about the precision of the SPOT. If memory serves me well, it seems most of the discussion was about the fact that a SPOT has put rescuers way off course due to less than optimal triangulation. I think everyone I have spoken to was referencing the SPOT1. I think Rad has it though. If your wife is happy..... I have never had need for the Avalanche Beacon I carry but it is better than not having it and it makes my girl alot happier.

Nice! Lucky to get out on such a sweet day. I was staring at the NT on my way back to town from Everson. I am very envious.

UPDATE 2/15/09 Due to late breaking circumstances beyond our control, the Nipigon Ice fest will not be an "official" event this year. This means no clinics, no evening presenters, no gear swap and such. However, all keen ice/mixed climbers are still invited to converge on Nipigon the weekend of February 27, 28, March 1 for an unofficial climbers gathering. Georgina at the Nipigon Café has been gracious enough to offer us the back section of her restaurant on Saturday evening so please stop by around 7‚ish for an impromptu climbers social. Rest assured, next year the fest will be back! &ndash Ice Fest Organizing Committee
