Great TR, V I think that bivy spoiled me. What a great perch that V found. With little flattening of snow the tent fit in there like it was meant to. Nothing soft about this woman -
Super!!

With a recent thread on the OW I figured I'd post a pic of the OW pitch I had lying around to complement the BB OW discussions. This thread seemed semi-appropriate so here it is (click on pic for the big version):

Stop by and I'll lend you my #6 - seriously. We used a #5 for most of it and I walked it for a few moves. It would be a good runout without, so it's up to you. The OW is not hard though or very strenuous... but it is still nice to protect. So yeah, the 5 was fine, but the 6 would take you farther and the weight difference wouldn't be that much. But whatever, if you want to borrow a #5 you can borrow mine. Doug

Jimbo, man, excellent pics and long looking tour. That looks just purely stelar. Right on.

Yeah, we did do it in 3 days, 2 nights, but still, the other factors (route being in better condition earlier and the loopable factor) still played in pretty strongly. I'm sure if one was motivated and strong they could do it in 2 days from white river. I've certainly heard of people doing Lib Ridge in 2 days from White River and Ptarmigan isn't much more involved or longer than getting to thumb rock. Most parties we saw last year were doing Lib Ridge in 3 days.

To whoever found and dropped off my camera today at the registration office - YOU ROCK!!
-
White River I'm just messin', but we did it through White River last year since it opened way earlier than Mowich, conditions were going (melting) fast, and it made for a real easy loop without having to spot a car at each end. We had no problems crossing the Carbon and getting onto the ridge. I've never been to the Mowich area so I can't compare it to that, but I've heard it's pretty nice.

[TR] MSH-mother's day ski - worm flows 5/9/2010
cbcbd replied to spionin's topic in the *freshiezone*
Thanks k. Give me a call -
Hey, was there for the mother's day event and my camera ended up jumping out of my pocket probably somewhere between 6500' and 7700'. So if anyone caught a Panasonic Lumix it would be awesome to have it back thanks, Doug

Agree with most here and want to emphasize on the skills needed since your experience seems vague - "avid backpacker with rope knowledge" It doesn't matter if you can setup a Z-pulley if you are fumbly-mcgee with crampons and haven't used an axe much - AMS'd at 14K walking down on ice above gaping crevasses is not the place to learn french technique. Build these basic skills, especially good footwork, and you won't ever have to use the famed and legendary self-arrest. And yes, just be honest with yourself and your skills.
