Hey Ben, As some have pointed it, what you're asking is a real broad question. For example, myself, in current shape run 5:05/mile for 5k and 5:30/mile for 10k. But just recovery/easy days, I run anywhere from 6:30 to 7 pace for 3-6 miles. My current long run is 10-12 miles, usually at 6:30 to 6:40 pace over hilly terrain. As for training for mountain climbing, it is not incredibly sport specific, at least in my experience. I remember when I was competing in xc/track in college and would get hammered when I tried to do a car to car alpine day. Anyway, I'm a big believer (and bias) that running, if your body tolerates it, is a great way to build general fitness. You're working your cardiorespiratory system and making your body adapt to the stress that is spending large amounts of time on your legs and feet. As far a general running pace, for a person who is not looking to race but just train for the mountains I believe there should be three types of runs, which can be combined. One, just general easy/recovery days, which should be jogging pace and you should finish the run feeling like you can run more. Next would be tempo or lactate threshold pace. This should feel like you're moving fast and putting in a good effort, but not make you go anaerobic. Finally is hills! Hills are good for everyone and everything so run them often. That was a long ramble... You may find this useful: http://www.runbayou.com/jackd.htm

John/Pete/murse: As of my last meeting, it sounds like I'll still be doing a bunch of clinical rotations in the Wenatchee and Chelan area, most likely jan-june time frame. murse: The Mission Mountains are N of missoula, outside of St. Ignatus. The westside is Indian land so it requires a permit, which can be purchased at the town's gas station. Takes a healthy climb to get into the range. Let me know if you have questions. -
Trip: Ski touring in Grad school - all over the PNW Date: 5/20/2013 Trip Report: This past fall I moved Spokane to continue PA school at UW. Previously I had a very flexible work schedule (8 days off in a row) and was living at Alpental. But now I am a weekend warrior and in class 9 hours everyday with numerous evening and weekend clinics, workshops, etc. Needless to say, I was a bit worried about my skiing opportunities this winter. Thankfully I met some great new ski partners and got to explore lots of new areas in the PNW that I would have probably never been to otherwise. Here are some pictures from my past winter. All pictures by me, Kevin Oberholser, unless otherwise noted. Looks like a sweet trip Kat and Pete! -
Run your marathon to the fullest - you'll be more likely to remember your marathon time and experience than feeling fatigued on on a climbing trip. Take it easy on your climbing trip. Make your partners carry the beer in their pack. A caveat being, I have no idea what this trip is. What mountain in Maine requires 5-6 days to climb? I would assume that the majority of this time will be spent hiking, so go slow and relaxed. If your climbing partners invited you on this trip the week after a marathon then they should be expecting this.

Fellow cc.com'ers, Just got a clinical assignment for Kellogg, ID for May 6-10. Rather than doing 100+ miles RT everday from Spokane, does anyone have a spare room they would be willing to rent out? I'll most likely be in clinic from 7a-7p, Mon thru friday. Really only need a place to stay for monday-thursday night. Thanks.
