Well, this happened to me at the Tooth last May. Yes, it is a popular place - expect crowds. But we ran into a group of 10 from WAC - 2 leaders and 8 newbs. The "leaders" had topped out "pitch" one and were throwing the rope down to each of the 8 followers one by one. We chatted with the newbs to find out the situation, waited a little, and then ASKED if we could jump in between climbers and move past them. They were not thrilled about the request but acquiesced. We quickly climbed past them. I think they should have offered first, but I'm not about to sit and stew in silence if they don't. Later they hogged up the rap stations and would NOT let us go by. One of our guys gave them an earfull for that. I would agree in regards to the rap station. Thats just dumb. And I think what you did was exactly right, talk to them and find out whats going on and ask. And my experience is different because it was in leavenworth and I was soloing easy stuff albeit no one was climbing the cracks I was in, just ropes were there. I have yet to run into a group like that in the alpine. All in all, doing what you did is exactly what I was trying to get at, even if I had a round about way of doing it. Hats off to you sir - and the guy that gave them an earful. But one good thing about the mounties, is they replace old webbing with brand new stuff. I went and climbed ingalls monday evening just after a mountie group had left and a bunch of the rap stations were brand new. -

I did not call you stupid, rather your comment. Big difference. And I was responding to NafeF as well, where he used the words majority and everyone interchangably, not the 'vocal minority.' I don't know, I was frustrated that my age group was called out, when as you pointed out other groups hog routes as well. Then no communication was had, therefore causing judgements. I'll agree, some people will do whatever they want because they are no rules... For the record, I hate it when groups claim crags or routes, however in my experience they have offered to move stuff out of the way. I guess this is why I'm mostly alpine climbing and only at crags on weekdays or shitty weather. -

Did you guys just read what you want to read? Most people, including myself, said communication would have solved this problem. Some people, however, are "blasting" the author for saying that leading is the only way to rock climb and that people who lead climb are better than those who do not. All of which are stupid assumptions to make since he did not talk to anyone. wtf...the CC.com consistency is being continued by you 5K by not reading/comprehending the thread and making stupid statements at the end. I mean sure kevbone and one or two others said "whoever gets their first" but honestly - everyone? -
I got it I got it: "Tool Festival" but then you'll have a bunch of scary looking dudes w/ tatoos showing up hmm...but i bet marcus will be there either way...

that band name sounds really familiar - best of luck. are they from seattle/uw?

Last year it was as cross country meet - so I quit that. This year I have mountain rescue training - what gives? If Sobo reads this, can this count as fall rigging? They're going to be ropes in use?

So to sum it up: Old guy needs to COMMUNICATE instead of blamming young people for ruining climbing. OR go alpine climbing or go in less popular areas. -
This was found just south of Ingalls Lake. If this is yours please let me know so I can reunite it promptly with its knife and fork. For size refernce:

Mark, I completely understand what you are saying. I must admit I am guilty of this at times, however I would not do this on a busy weekend/popular climb. If I bring new people with me, its on an off weekend or weekday and on a not so popular area. Here is one thing I'd like to point out: not all young people are the "cell phone generation" or "gym climbers" etc. Obviously I fall in this age group and would like to think those names do no represent me. Secondly, young people are not the only ones with somewhat poor climbing ethics... -
Well I'm going to be in the Seattle area, from thursday to sunday and have all day friday free. I would like to get some climbing in either at index or exit 32/38 (which ever has more trad climbs) or snoqualmie pass - like guye peak or the tooth or something. Just want to get out and climb. Send me a pm, I'll check pretty regularly while at work over the next couple days. -Kevin

Seems as if that disaster could have be avoided by a little parenting? But I don't want to be to much a armchair QB since i'm not a parent. I have a question, perhaps a dumb one...so these hikers that got stuck on a ledge - how did they get there? One has to imagine if their gear slide away from them they'd be like oh shit, well time to turn around, unless they were rapelling? Ah who knows, it seems, as it was said before, these situations usually have bizarre stories that led these people to trouble.

I'm going to second what OlympicMtnBoy said. When I was talking to a ranger earlier this week, she said all the now closed TH would remain closed until the fire is completely out, which last time I checked was late sept/early oct. So be sure to call a ranger station.
