  17. So now you protect only with cams?
  18. When I hear "decommission," I don't think of putting up a gate. I thought decommission meant tear out the roadbed, return the alignment to the original slope contours, remove bridges, and cause the forest to re-grow where the road was. I think it would be sorry state of affairs if land managers wanted to close all or most roads. Some management. When I was a boy, the Forest Service always had a campaign running to get people to visit, camp, fish, whatever. Instead of focusing on the local land managers, it seems to me we ought to be writing our representatives to boost the budgest of the agencies in question. Fairweather hit the nail on the head when he pointed out the problems with the roads here are impacting families and working people. Pretty soon the rich and the unemployed will be the only ones with enough time to get into some areas.
  19. Thanks for your thorough & comprehensive response.
  20. At the end of my Basic Course, the course chairman said "you now have the know-how to get into a LOT of trouble."

I got the first Chouinard catalog and the first Great Pacific Ironworks catalogs in the store a few days after they arrived. Still have them. Used the Chouinard catalog to clean seeds from the ditchweed that passed for smoke in the 1970s, a little green stain still in the crease in the back cover. Goldline and diaper harnesses of 1" webbing. Gerry, Holubar, Eastern Mountain Sports mailorder, Bill Forrest. 2 pages of ice axes in REI's catalog. Being able to buy fabric and zippers from REI. Before REI became a joke. Kelty frame packs when Dick Kelty still made them. Still the best at load carrying. Not one thing worn or broken on mine after 36 years. Sack: BB4.
  23. Hijacking your post here: the problem with the M group is the "regardless of context" issue. The ratio of common sense (or situational awareness) vs. rote rule-following is very one-sided. In my experience it often crossed the line into silliness. More than once I got the feeling that the hectoring being dished out came more from an inept inability to see the facts of a condition rather than the stated commitment to Safety.
  24. 1. "Conservationist" and "recreationist?" What do those words mean? 2. Where did you get the premise that land managers as a group want to decommission all roads? That's what's implied in the blank statement 3. On the other hand, if it's not all roads, which roads? Or is your study a philosophical one in which only concepts are studied? 4. How do you know it's "the" conflict? Are all conflicts over any road closure proposal so alike that a study can call it "the" conflict? Seen one, seen 'em all? 5. What is the stated topic of the study, exactly? Your post is too vague and amorphous for my understanding. Is there info about the study available online?
  25. There's something to be said for stout anchors that don't blow. A lot of things were not heard of in the old days. I started climbing on Goldline, for example. Remember when we used manual typewriters and slide rules? All sorts of things change and progress. A little redundancy in an anchor someday may contribute to you living to be even older than you are already. If you can do it and it's easy and it makes things even safer than they already are, why not? When I started there were no climbing harnesses. The concept was unbirthed, unheard of. But you wear a harness. At what historical period do you drop into the scene and say, this is legitimate but that is silly or overkill?
