  1. Why? you will not beleive it, may not even read it. According to evolutionary theory, starting with the chaos and disorder of the Big Bang and the simplicity of hydrogen and helium gases, the universe created itself. This is clearly a violation of natural law, namely the Second Law of Thermodynamics. According to this law an isolated system can never increase in order and complexity, transforming itself to higher and higher levels of organization. An isolated system will inevitably, with time, run down, becoming more and more disorderly. There are no exceptions. Contrary to this natural law, evolutionists believe the universe is an isolated system which transformed itself from the chaos and disorder of the Big Bang and simplicity of hydrogen and helium gases into the incredibly complex universe we have today. This is a direct violation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. If natural laws are natural laws, the universe could not have created itself. The only alternative is that it is not an isolated system. There must be a Creator that is external to and independent of the natural universe who was responsible for its origin and who created the natural laws that govern its operation. I can read this well enough to know you don't understand science very well. The Second Law takes way too much abuse from creationists. Entropy is a thermodynamic property, not some visual property of neatness and complexity. If you don't know what that means and why it does not preclude evolution, don't worry about it, but don't use it improperly in an argument or you will not be taken seriously.
  2. You're right on. When was the last time you felt God breathing down your neck like some sort of cosmic Chairman Mao? He is certainly not micromanaging your every thought and action. That's what people try to do. Speaking, of course, under the assumption that the Bible is correct, there have been times when God was much more physically apparent, even in the flesh as a man, performing miracles no man could reproduce, and people STILL didn't believe. God knows we'll believe what we want to believe and is not unjust in keeping a lower profile than we would like him to. For interested parties, "Finding God in the Questions" is a seemingly (I'm not finished yet) well written book that addresses many of these issues far more eloquently and critically than the average trite response.
  3. I was referring to your distaste for initiatives, while I think they're sometimes necessary to reign in legislators who are WAY off route or had one too many :brew:'s
  4. At least Ted's gone on record opposing such measures. OK, Oregonians, make your voices heard, especially to the legislators not sponsoring this bill so they have some constituency feedback to back them up in opposing this. CBS, hypothetically, if this goes through, would you still be opposed to an initiative seeking to repeal it? Not that it would pass or anything.
  5. sweeeet! sicko

    Music

Shame on you if you haven't picked this up yet, especially John Frieh because I know he's got good taste in classical: [from an earlier post]
  7. favorite new vocabulary word!
  8. It's a conspiracy with computer makers since very few people need the computing capacity currently available, so people have to get a new computer they shouldn't need if they want to upgrade windows. no thanks.
  9. And on the weekend when you're supposed to be climbing? So, are you going to work for Microsoft to begin a new line of daily security patches for Vista?
  10. Not to make light of a death, but this happened 10 years ago...
  11. not true. this doesn't have anything to do with global warming, but I can't resist that's not even close to a correct interpretation of that law. a simple electrochemical reaction will split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. combustion of a hydrocarbon and oxygen generates water. water is not conserved, only the mass/energy contained in it. second, even though simple chemistry leaves the atoms & electrons intact, there are other forces at work in the world. nuclear fission is based on converting actual mass to energy, essentially removing parts of the atom from existence by changing its form to electromagnetic radiation.
  12. irrigate WA state crops during the summer & fall, provide continuous water for an ever-growing population, etc. The ramifications of losing our glaciers really suck any way you look at it. More huge reservoirs/dams will be needed, and that will only help if the precipitation keeps up the pace.
  13. I'm just eagerly counting the days before I can grow a papaya in my back yard. During winter.
  14. I tried the clawhammer but I just scraped up my fingers on the points.
  15. On the bright side, we're making sure no tree will ever starve again.
  16. you're joking, right? Just to prove once again that there isn't a situation in life that "Lord of the Rings" doesn't have a quote for... "The world is changed... Much that once was is lost."
  17. Yeah, listen to this guy. I was just out with him a week ago and the difference between his and my down gear was quite remarkable. My old-school GoLite jacket got a little wet when tent condensation dripped on it and de-lofted a couple of sections. Had to warm/dry it in the bag the next night. Thankfully the bag was synthetic because it would have been worthless [his down bag was perfectly fine also b/c it also had a newer outer fabric]. The new highly water resistant/proof outer fabrics make all the difference. When [if?] the majority of Everest & Denali expeditions switch to synthetic, I'll do the same. For now, it will be painful to spend the money on Feathered Friends gear but I think it's worth it. In case we're missing your point, what type of problems were you having with down?
  18. I'm a little curious why nobody has referenced "Stone Nudes" at some point on this thread...??? I'm all about using clothes you're going to wear anyway to augment the bag (or render it unnecessary, e.g. no bag on my Rainier DC climb). Choose your foods wisely - the fattier the better, within reason - and count calories to be sure you don't have too much. Fat has over twice the calories for the same weight of protein and carbs. Peanut butter is the most compact and lightweight product that's a real food you would want to eat, apart from something like pure oil (yuck!). Stay away from veggies or anything with significant water/undigestable content. Mostly though, ultralight is about being rich.
  19. I sure am suddenly hungry for some prime rib of propecia.
  20. No doubt. But this one didn't do that. It probably learned we're not worth the trouble.
  21. GOULET
  22. Got my tongue stuck in my cheek there. I don't think we're the only species that looks out for number one though, we're just smarter (although this could be debated ) and more capable of doing so. Ya, I don't think they should have killed them either.
  23. just be glad you're on the winning side
  24. Can you make some sort of uber-nunchucks out of ice tools and webbing?
