I was fortunate to be in there late last summer photographing glaciers. I thought it was sensationally beautiful terrain... No big storms when I was there, but previous to that, up in Kalispell... holy gawdamighty... wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near those huge thunderheads...and they all sprang up after noon, yup.

yep Pasayten/Shellrock etc a stellar idea, fine trip for anyone, scout or not. I've passed a group of scouts on the trail inbound from Slate Pass. Several years ago John Roper laid out a 50 mile rt in the Oval/Star/Reynolds area for the scouts he was working with (including his son). not sure if they ever did it, might have ended up somewhere else. But he has done several of those 50 milers with the scouts. pm me if you feel like it, I could put you in touch with him.

Some years ago I was at a UW talk by Reinhold Messner during which he described being up high in the Himalaya when a large earthquake struck. I recall his description of many snow avalanches. I have long thought that certain NC features are likely the result of huge earthquakes. The great rockslide on the Eldorado Creek approach to Eldo comes to mind. There's a gigantic old landslide part way up Thunder Creek that could easily have been earthquake triggered. No specific scientific evidence on these, though.

If Assassin has prominence, you'll see the Top 99 list, not the Top 100... I have to say I was pretty damned concerned when I didn't see any tracks.. & was sure happy to get yer call... Wow what an accomplishment...!

Bivouac has a pretty good summary. Freshfield Icefield, Eric Coulthard's labeled pano shows the snow peak at center as 'Mt Bulyea'. Thanks again.

That word is definitely the stumbling block. I searched on 'meadow' on bivouac and came up empty. I may try to show this to the M's step-granddaughter who lives in Blaine, she is very active with family memorabilia and probably knows the handwriting pretty well. They have a ton of handwritten stuff. Glenn said 'I've got a job for you...', little did I know. We were thinking you were our best bet...!!!

There's a pretty fair historical precedent. Two that come to mind - The Roost, fa & fda, John & Taffy Roper if memory serves me. And Joker Mt in the Pasayten, named for Lage Wernstedt's dog, who undoubtedly made many a fda, though the documentation is limited. JR's current pooch Sofy has been to the top of quite a few mts... and I'm pretty sure there are others, anybody else?

no sir.. esp. not that night ~20 min exposure.. wowee... plus my sled isn't big enough to carry the huge cajones required for that traverse..!! Great trip gents.! it looks just a bit different back in there right now, I was by there early this morning & the wind was howling. you sure nailed it.

John Baldwin, the renowned guidebook author & ski explorer of British Columbia's Coast Mountains, will present a slide show at the Bellingham REI on February 9, starting at 6 pm. For more details, click HERE. I've been truly inspired by John's adventures & photographs. I attended his presentation a couple of years ago in Vancouver, & it was really outstanding. The room is a bit on the small side so I recommend arriving early. We are lucky to get him to come down, so hope to see you there!

I also carry an ACR plb: http://www.acrelectronics.com/ I use the SPOT for tracking, but the ACR plb is the gold standard for rescue.

I was by there late yesterday on a joy ride with Tom S and we saw your ski tracks...!! No pics though. There was a couple of holy shites uttered... by the way, my two OATs read 9 deg C and 11 deg C, they tend to read warm but I was still surprised, expected it to be colder than that; that was 8000 to 9000' at around 4 pm.

My old climbing partner Kevin Miller is from Darrington, he was living there back then but maybe too young at that time. I know he climbed quite a bit down there at 3 O'clock. But he knew just about everybody & what they were up to. I'll get hold of him & ask. ps. I haven't forgotten the pics I owe you..! a promise made is a debt unpaid. I'm hoping to get in there later in October.

These are very common in this region. For example, in Idaho's Lost River range, around Borah peak, they are seen in virtually every drainage.

Craig stayed with us last year when he was out here working on another part of his guide cert.. a really good guy, devoted & talented climber.. what a major bummer.. my sincere sympathies & condolences to his family & friends...

Holy smokes! What was your longest rest? I (& a bunch of friends) did it in a week once, way back when. we thought we were HOT! The Suiattle road was washed out that year so we were treated to a nine mile road walk at the end, in the dark and with a full moon. Another time I did it in about three minutes...!! then turned around and went back in about two minutes. Had Layton along for that trip. (Ok, so maybe on those two times, we cheated) Now I'm wondering what the slowest time ever was..

wow.. hugely understated TR. I don't think I've met the dog that could carry 'em. there's a few folks round here that have been, as they say, 'out there'... at least by my standards, that's 'out there'.. good job!

I had a call from NCNP friends late last night, spoke again this AM. The car has been found on the N fork Cascade River rd below the parking lot (road still blocked). The missing person was permitted out for two nights to Cascade Pass/Pelton Basin/Sahale Arm, and as mentioned, is well overdue. Searchers on foot are headed up this morning, the weather is currently not flyable.

yep that is a remarkable sequence.. right place, right time, amazing that V. had the cam ready to go.. but then she is a very talented photographer, as well. outstanding TR, by the way...!
