  1. I also donated. Hope Paul gets healed up soon.
  2. Here are some pictures from a recent hike to Matterhorn. We did not go over to Sac, but several parties did it. One of them said it was a reasonably straightforward scramble. It was the first time for me in the Wallowas. Really pretty area.
  3. Awesome Rad and Blake!! I really enjoyed reading the TR as well.
  4. Well, I've had the reverse experience . Scarpa Freneys (old model) were too tight, while La Sportivas (Glacier, Nepal) have offered reasonable fits. The cardinal rule, of course. is to try the boot out before buying. I had bought the Scarpas on E-bay, and suffered.
  5. Very cool map Steph!! How would the glaciers on Mt Rainier compare to these glaciers? I'm guessing many of them would be bigger, but actual sizes would be nice to see. Didn't find any info on the UW Geology Projects site (I didn't dig deep though).
  6. This option may work for you. Download the free PDF convertor doPDF. From MS Word, select print, and select doPDF as the printer. In the advanced options for the doPDF printer, you can select a custom size for the output PDF file. Here is a test doc that I converted to PDF using doPDF.
  7. Damn!! This season has had more than its share of accidents in the alpine. Good luck with the recovery Chad! Glad to know it was not any worse. Rod covered a hell of a long way in 5-6 hrs. I had a basketball-sized rock fall on my foot (from just around my knee-level, thankfully) on that route. Luckily, it just produced a big black pinky toe, and I was able to finish the climb. The distance made us take the extra night to hike out the 3rd morning though.
  8. [aside] Wow! You have big feet Bill!! A cute girl was looking at the big feet of my friend, and remarked "You have really big feet!". He said, nonchalantly, "My foot is not the ONLY thing that is big." [/aside] I wear US size 9 street shoes. My first pair of mountaineering boots were the La Sportiva Glaciers, and I went with size 42 (supposed to be equivalent to US 9). They were tight on my big toes. Then I got the Nepal EVOs in size 42.5, and they offer a much better fit for the toes. I also have Koflachs (Arctis, plastic double boots) in size US 9 (Euro 42), and they have way more room than either the Glaciers or the Nepals. In fact, they are almost loose (especially in the heels - when climbing ice with them, my heels lift up despite lacing tight). I'd like to think the double boots (Baruntse) should be roomier than their single leather compatriots. But you know the golden rule for buying boots - try them on first.
  9. The person from the park I spoke to on the phone said I'm not allowed to sleep in my car overnight in the Paradise parking lot (I was advised to get a camping spot). Something about Paradise Valley Road was mentioned as far as overnight parking goes, but I couldn't get the full details. Is there a place where one could sleep in their car overnight inside the park (as close as possible to Paradise)? I think I can use some of the pullouts on NF 52, but that is outside the park.
  10. Here you go: [video:vimeo]3746358 The code is [ video:: vimeo]3746358 (without the spaces, of course).
  11. Great job keeping it together team! Happy endings are always nice . As usual, Steph has done an outstanding job of documenting the whole trip. Its always a treat to read your TRs. May be they were there, but you thought they were all dudes ? .
  12. John Crock has sent my list (of stolen gear) to Paul, the current owner of (the erstwhile?) Hyperspud in Yakima. Paul will share the list with a couple of pawn shops in the Yakima area. Someone pointed out that stash in Boise to me as well (appeared in Craig's List, right?). Hope you get it back. Thanks for keeping an eye out.
  13. Talk about completely stripped!! I'll have to hunt for a new/used car now. Teh Suck. As far as the gear goes, my insurance agency is going to pay me about $5K (70% of the value, as estimated by them). About $2100 is what they are holding back as depreciation value. If I replace my gear within 6 months, I can send them receipts of the new items to claim the depreciation value (potentially all of it). They did not ask for any pictures. Not a bad deal I must say. Its going to be a while before I can buy back all the gear though.
  14. These pieces are not mine. Post/PM if you find any more "interesting" gear sellers. TIA.
  15. I don't know about that site, but Jamin has come to good senses for a while now. He's done with all the hot-blooded "first winter ascent" craze, and appears to be going on quite conservative outings these days. May be Jesus has something to do with it, but I don't really care what made him change his attitude. I'm happy for the dude.
  16. Priceless indeed!! Hope you go on more trips with your daughters.
  17. It was a 2000 Honda Civic Si. I have heard stories about Honda Civic being the most stolen car, especially the Si models - they are supposed to be popular with folks who street-race back in Los Angeles. But in Prosser??? I learned that there is pretty much nothing left of the car - just the frame is what they recovered. Forget about the gear in the trunk, apparently there was no trunk to mention! I loved that car - was hoping to drive it for some years now. It had 120K miles on it, but I had no complaints.
  18. They just found my car in Yakima. The Yakima Sheriff spotted it this morning. Apparently, it has been "completely stripped". I'm waiting to talk to the towing folks to get an idea of the damage done. I'm not too hopeful about getting any of the gear back, or even the car to be running again. People in/near Yakima, watch out for sale of gear. I have comprehensive insurance, as well as renters insurance. Not sure whether I'll be able to convince them about all the things I had in the trunk, and their values. Any one had similar experiences with claims for stolen gear? I do not have the receipts for each and every item. I have the policies with Safeco. I'm usually good at taking the stuff out of my trunk when I come home. I was just too busy this time with an upcoming trip (for work). Besides, I was thinking just as I have been used to - its Pullman after all!!
  19. My car was stolen from in front of my apartment in Pullman WA last night. I had a whole lot of gear in the trunk. If you notice any one suspicious trying to sell a bunch of climbing gear, please let me know. The funny (or sad?) part is that I had left my car in the same outside parking lot for a full two weeks while I was out traveling. I came back Friday night, and it was there. I drove it yesterday, and parked it in front of my apartment at 1 AM, and it was gone today when I checked around 1 pm.
  20. Another vote for doing the route car-to-car. If there is extra road to walk (which seems to be the case now), one good option may be to bivy at the trailhead and go in one push from there. Plenty of TRs from previous seasons here (do a search) - Terry McClain's TR had some good beta (was from late July of 2007 though).
  21. I had the same experience.
  22. Totally awesome!!!
  23. Fantastic pictures, and excellent writing, as always!!! Thanks for posting the link here.
