  1. your threats have been noted.
  2. aren't we all corporations in the end, really? if you think about it.... and when corporations lose, WE lose. because WE are corporations. do not vote against yourself: vote for corporations.
  3. i'm afraid that the actual polarity between our views would be insufficient to fire up a screed from these quarters, since i tend to exhibit some similar tendencies of view as poop and brainfog. really? well maybe not. they are just a little too passionate about lonely choss piles in the woods. and richard simmons. plus, i'd hate to get all formal on a subject that i don't see as all that important. i just don't think a post of mine on cc.com would have many repercussions in the larger world. MOMENTUM!
  4. MOMENTUM!
  5. DO NOT MAKE FUN OF THE MOMENTUM. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MOMENTUM. MOMENTUM!
  6. or they develop something which might be called a "work ethic" once they are actually inspired by something beyond the simple need for a job. maybe the kids you see simply aren't inspired or haven't found inspiration yet, and having someone tell them they are "lazy" or somesuch nonsense turns them off even more?
  7. i can live with the term being used for college students, but even then, it's one of those rather recent terms, like double tall skim vanilla latte. i prefer "student". hmmmm and did i learn a lot in college? i think the larger college context taught me more than learning any specific data points or cognitive skills. oh i guess i learned how to spell nietzsche. i suppose there were some other things, if'n i start recollecting.
  8. In the real world of work, people who never play hooky are valuable employees. I've missed about 2 days in 7 years at this job. I'm proud of the fact that I don't play hooky, and I don't get sick...knock on wood. My students know they can depend on Professor Webster to be there everyday, on time, prepared to work. When it dumps 10 inches of powder...I still come to work. If that bothers you, I'm sorry. I have a strong work ethic, and it has kept me fully employed for 38 years with a variety of employers. Yes, I've missed out on a lot of fun...but the benefits are a paid off house, car and credits cards. I also get 7 weeks off, paid. When we try to hire teachers, most of them don't work out because they do not have a strong work ethic. They skip out and let our clients (the students) down. All employers need reliable employees, not flakes. I do agree that working weekends so you can save money and retire early is not good. You have to climb when you are still relatively young and healthy. I have always envied people who take vast amounts of time off, or play the system to get their climbing and leisure paid for by uncle sam. However, I can't bring myself to do it. I think it's cheating, and not carrying your weight. An honest days work, for an honest days pay makes me feel good, and look forward to the weekend. except for the students as "clients" part: kinda orwellian.
  9. WRONG! Nothing is not nature. "nothing" is simply a concept, "created" by man. therefore "nothing"= nature (what is "nothing", what is "nature": what is "what"?).
  10. There you go again.
  11. everything is nature. nothing is nature. what a paradox!
  12. hey he was fishing for "purity" here, and suggestions were simply given as to what that might mean. many suggestions. many many oh boy. don't say that bolting it on lead wouldn't be more engaging both intellectually and emotionally. IF it needs bolts. "needs". hmph. so one might conflate "purity" with "commitment" and "engagement", i suppose....and if one does, undoubtedly rap-bolting would be less "pure".
  13. so he wants to climb with a "pure" style, does he? yet all you can do is moan and whine about those who suggest a "pure" style potentially might entail eschewing bolts.... strange canuckian logic you've been dealin' out in yer posts.
  14. u don't really like muffdiving all that much, do you?
  15. "since the alternatives will invevitably fare worse." now there's a creative thinker!
  16. "bolt the motherfucker, eh!" "giv'er eh!" "now can we go get drunk, eh?"
  17. i'm not sure what that says about your judgment, given that the thread is about marc's uncertainly around his judgment. kinda funny, no?
  18. you're such a nationalist. have you been to this slab? have you witnessed first-hand this situation? and even if you had, would you be in a position to evaluate its possibilities for being climbed without bolts? nah, didn't think so.
  19. and yes, the "unfettered economic man" that you sarcastically refer to played a role, with his unbridled optimism in the RE market.
  20. Portraying the meltdown as an decontextualized, ideology-free alphabet soup is a great way to absolve the "greed is good", "unfettered economic man", "economic freedom uber alles" religion that lies at the heart of this disaster. agreed. i am not suggesting that the rest of the narrative be ignored (which should be obvious from the way i framed my comment), but the fact remains that unregulated over-leveraged investment (speculation), coupled with unregulated credit default swaps (shoulda been reg'd like insurance?), played a major role in the formation of the situation that- all would agree- collapsed to an extent.
  21. i think much of the above is accurate, wthtout delving into the larger narrative. except for the implicit belief that the public "bureaucratic mechanisms" should be replaced with private bureaucratic mechanisms (masquerading as a benevolent financial over-seers of the public good).
  22. can anyone tell me where the word "snorkel" comes from?
  23. now now children....
  24. from schnorchel, german for air intake. hmph.
  25. i think i need a snorkel too. snorkel. now that's a fun word!
