Trip: South Early Winters Spire - South Arete
Date: 10/10/2009
Trip Report:
I haven't been out in a while so I thought I'd try something easy this weekend. SEWS seemed like a good option.
We car camped at the Blue Lake TH on Friday. It was colder than a witch's tit. I woke up a couple of times shivering in my 15 degree bag in the middle of the night. It must have been at least the low 20's.
We got up before dawn, and hike the easy approach making it to the base of the route in about 90 minutes. It was beautiful out!
Unfortunately we broke a good sweat and by the time we geared up, our fingers were numb. Everyone opted to keep on their boots for warmth, and wear a couple of layers of clothing, gloves, and climb with packs. This is what it's all about!
The crux move was hard as hell with the pack, boots, and numb fingers. Eventually we warmed up and the outing became more and more enjoyable.
One other party (of 2) followed us up. Other than them, we had the peak to ourselves. I can't say the same about the hike out - the trail was PACKED.
