Presumably, the area is under some sort of curfew and/or military martial law simply to stabilize the area. If this were the case, then the command structure has protocols to follow as far as limiting gatherings and demonstrations in an effort to maintain order. Peaceful or no, large masses of people are hard to maintain and can get out of control rather easily. It's easy to armchair quarterback from the safety of you pathetic cubicle, but take the long view: stability needs to be achieved first, then democracy. We did the same thing in Europe in '45. stability and then democracy huh? well that was the lofty dream we had for Indochina back in the 50s... and look where that got us! them countries eventually came around and learned to like democracy... but not till many years after they'ed kicked us out. and Europe in '45?... in that day/age/place, the occupation of Europe and the Mar$hall Plan was definitely something the world needed. not so with Iraq in '04. and BTW, I ain't in the cubicle; got the day off, sucka!
  7. is this true? what, that WFF is actually Tom Robbins? don't know... like I said that's what i heard once. so have you read Fuck Yes!, Muffy? damn funny book, i recommend it to all. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0940183218/qid=1080333056/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-9643025-4683033?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

one part of the Iraq occupation that sickened me bigtime the most when i heard a news story about how US troops were breaking up peaceful pro-Saddam demonstrations (this was like a few weeks before we caught the bastard). anyway, according to the story (if you believe Nat'l Propaganda Radio, which I do) it was a totally civil, non-aggro demonstration. so it's like how the fuck are we expecting to teach these people democracy if we don't allow them the same democratic rights we enjoy in our own country?
  9. i thot it was called The Surreal *World*..? anyway, that's the one reality show i could potentially see myself watching habitually if i was like stuck in bed cause of a broken femur or something. watched part of that episode with her, Ron Jeremy, Vanilla Ice, and that chick who had been on some other ... reality show i think? too funny. speaking of Ron J and strange celebrity-gatherings, see attachment (don't worry, it's PG-rated). this picture never ceases to crack me up.
  10. When a woman says: "This place is a mess! C'mon, You and I need to clean up, Your stuff is lying on the floor and you'll have no clothes to wear if we don't do laundry right now!" What the man hears: blah, blah, blah, blah, C'MON blah, blah, blah, blah, YOU AND I blah, blah, blah, blah, ON THE FLOOR blah, blah, blah, blah, NO CLOTHES blah, blah, blah, blah, RIGHT NOW.
  11. Fuck Yes! A Guide to the Happy Acceptance of Everything. the author is listed as a "Reverend Wing F. Fing, MD, PhD, DDS, LLD, DVD, and much much more!"... which someone once told me is a pen name for Tom Robbins. also, all you Ed Abbey fans out there (something tells me you might fall in that group Squid).... if you haven't read The Fools Progress you should; little-known gem.
  12. can definitely do it Sunday. Saturday is iffy; will know by later tonight or tomorrow morning tho. i'm assuming you'd want to camp at/near the trailhead the night before? oh, and i dunno if i'm up for (if even capable of) this "quick slog up" business... but i am up for the 3 am start, so we'll have plenty of daylight at least. have climbed St. Helens before, BTW.

    deeply offensive

well it's ironic cause they say the reason the American people (er... i mean th' US Supreme Court) liked Bush enuf to see past his faults and put him in the White House was cuz he was so personable, humorous, etc... but i think this Richard Clarke thing and other issues will make the voters realize that he not only makes jokes... but the dumbass IS a joke. i don't think he's gonna win" again this year.
  14. what th' fuck is up with this fascination with Richard Thimmons that so many on this website seem to have?!? don't know whether to be amused or disturbed... or both.

    Mirror

side note about symmetricality... it's actually not really true that we're all symmetrical in the left-right. didja know that with each and every one of us, for *every* body part we have two of (eyes, ears, breasts, hands, etc) one is always gonna be larger than the other. always(!) ... even if it's barely or not even noticable. pretty cool, huh??

    Mirror

yeah i heard this ... what would you call it, sort of a koan i guess... many many years ago. stumped me for a while. then little by little came to some conclusions: first of all, it has to do with perspective. turn your head sideways and the mirror will reverse "up" and "down" as well, dummy!! no but seriously tho... it really has to do with the fact that we're all more or less symmetrical in the left-right orientation but not so in the up/down orientation ... and if you think about it, *that* is cuz we evolved with this funny thing called Gravity which made it so that our "up part", the head, had to evolve differently from our "down part", the feet. and also, because of gravity, we always (usually) have our heads pointing "up". so because of all of this, we've grown to think of left and right as being more "flexible" or "changeable" than up/down. (ever meet a dyslexic person who confused their ups & downs??) so basically.. when you're looking in the mirror and the bozo staring back at you is holding his/her beer in their LEFT hand and you're holding your beer in your RIGHT, don't fret ... it's just gravity playing tricks on yer mind. OK, enuf psycho-babble for a wednesday morning.

    boot funk

good way to get rid of perma-stank in your gear is soaking the stuff in a baking soda bath; 1 Tbsp baking soda per gallon water. rinse thoroughly and/or put in wash afterwards. works wonders on my biking backpack & gloves. (don't know what type of boots yer referring to tho; if they're full-leather i'd check with a boot shop first, make sure it's ok)
  18. oh, i see... didn't realize we were talking barometric altimeters. had always thot that the ones that had an "altimeter" (as shown on REI.com) just had the 5th-satellite capability. i've used survey-grade GPS a whole bunch on the job, but haven't ever used any recreational models.
  19. well some GPS *have* an altimeter, but only the heavier/spendier ones which i personally wouldn't get. yeh climbing volcanos or other big glacial peaks is probably the one & only outdoor sport, besides maybe sea kayaking, where GPS are worth their cost and weight, IMHO. for most stuff i like my map n' compass just fine. but i can imagine (and have heard personal accounts i think) about how GPS can be a life-saver in total whiteout conditions on a bigass glacier. that being said, i've never been caught in a whiteout on the volcanos i've climbed and have had *many* more times in the wilderness wondering what my elevation was than i have wondering my x/y coordinates. so i too am undecided on whether to get an altimeter or GPS, though i do want to get one or the other soon. i can imagine that even an altimeter would help ya some in whiteout conditions. if you go with the altimeter, you'll probably have to buy it out here tho... do they actually sell those in florida??
  20. definitely! ...or well, hoping to get back into it this year at least. between 1999 thru '01 I climbed Hood, Adams, St. Helens (in winter), Olympus and Glacier Pk and some smaller stuff too. dreams include Baker, Shuksan, Rainier, Constance, Anderson & others. for the most part, i'm into doing the easy routes; altitude and sweet views are more important to me than route technicality. have done some alpine/trad; would do so again (and ice too) if others had gear to lend and wanted to bring a gumby along. just never have felt like investing in all that fancy hardware, except for the glacier stuff.
  21. well Greg, if you want to hang out in a forum that doesn't have a lot of Dubya-bashers, ya picked the wrong one, pal! climbers & other outdoorsy folk don't tend to like the guy. if i'd learned about & joined this site a few years ago i prolly woulda had more to say about these topics... have gotten kinda apathetic about politix in recent years. i tend to read the non-Dubya threads in Spray much more than the Dubya threads. tho i do still know enuf to know that the guy is a frickin' moron. and no, i'm not going to give examples; i really don't have the time or energy to discuss/write about it. maybe at Pub Club sometime... actually one way (FYI) in which I agree with the bastard is that i think we should drill the hell out of Alaska's oil reserves. totally goes against all my environmental morals, but i think reducing our involvement/engtanglement in Mideast issues is much more important right now. depending who you talk to or which news stories ya believe, way too much of the money we give to the Saudi royal family (via Chevron et.al.) ends up in the pockets of Al Qaeda, or at least was for many years there. just plain stinkin' ridiculous. anyway, I say any Republican who shares his elk steaks at the spring BBQ is a cool Republican. (I'm assuming your "location" .. volunteering for Kerry ... is a joke Greg?) cheers
  22. never been there in the winter but I have had the pleasure of working in that area for parts of three different summers. stayed at the Duck Brand a bunch, and liked it; rooms were kinda simple/humble, but it was nice having the restaurant just downstairs. other places we stayed often: http://www.virtualcities.com/ons/wa/c/wac7201.htm (right across street from the MV Brewing Co) http://www.riversedgewinthrop.com/resort/area.html good luck!

    St Paddy's Day

green (as in, young) beer is all fine and good when there's nothing else available. but green-colored beer is a fuckin' heresy. (... EVEN if endorsed by a life-sized carboard pic of Kathy Ireland ) probably makes ol' St. Paddy turn in his grave everytime a vat is bottled or kegged. will be at Finn MacCools in the U-District tonight (Uni Way at like 43rd) if anyone wants to share some suds & climbing talk (PM me). wish i coulda made it to PC last night, have only been to two so far... mebbe next week. cheers
