  1. funny - i would say the opposite of scaredsilly - my experience is alpine ascents is smaller denali groups and more personal. alpine institute more "industrial". although not in a kmfdm, nitzer ebb, skinny puppy kind of way.
  2. i did the grand traverse last year in b5's - partner in five tennies - i think the tennies were easier on his feet for the easier terrain. but the edging was better in the b5's. either worked well for us.
  3. i found the approach moderately challenging (we did epi three weeks ago) for a 4 WD that has pretty low clearance. the clearance is more of an issue than needing 4wd. pack a cooler with some cold ones for the drive out.
  4. call remote medical international - they could probably set you up with a good deal and customize it for you as well
  5. i have been there 4 times - feel free to pm me
  6. homeowners covered it - i took a picture of the rack and gear (prior to the theft...) and used that to calculate the check with the adjuster
  7. thanks - cathedral peak is a good idea and fits the bill, definitely lots of shorter crags in that area

  11. Hey - I wanted to let the community know that Remote Medical International is offering a Wilderness First Aid course in North Bend Sept 16-17. The course is a 16 hour training that covers basic wilderness first aid and preparation for long term care away from an ambulance or hospital. This is excellent training for climbers (rock, alpine, mtnrg...). Martin Volken of Pro Guide Service is partnering with Remote Medical to offer this course. The sign up is here: www.remotemedical.com questions about the course can be directed to info@remotemedical.com
  12. i am headed to alaska and want to take my digital camera. i usually take a standard slr that takes AAs. any thoughts on how to maintain battery life for two weeks up there? anyone have experience with a digital camera on denali or something similar? thanks
  13. boonecounty - i have a half dozen shots of you from the summit looking down the last pitch of the s. face - pm me with your email and i'll send em your way.
  14. A huge thanks to Chris Greyell, Mark Hanna, Matt Perkins et al for the access work they have done for Darrington. The trail sign at Squire Creek (3 o'clock) looks great and will definitely have a lasting impact with the F.S. Thanks Matt for your work to keep the road opened and maintained.

    Denali Attempt

as far as i know, and the last time i was there, the guide services work together to place and maintain the pickets across the autobahn. my last time across the autobahn i cleaned the traverse and walked into 17 camp with about 30 pickets attached to myself - not only was it heavy but i couldnt get them off either. it has a bit clostrophobic with the weight and not really being able to move at that point.
  16. mattp - any recent news on the darrington road access?
  17. all the sport climbing on the north side of the road is open and goose egg as well - warm temps out there last week. ticks are out though.
  18. hey - in the pic with the "two guys you worked with" - who is that guy on the left? i think i worked an aconcagua trip with him a few years ago? is his name mauricio?
  19. what are the dates on the closure?
  20. check out texasclimbers.com i have bouldered at bull creek - not bad actually. and have climbed the sport routes along the greenbelt, the new wall/great wall. not bad considering you are in austin. slick limestone, well worn holds. that web site has plenty of topos and directions.
  21. dan - that is the system i have used up there. i size up a size for the buttress though - for comfort. with insulated super gaitors and intuition you should be set.
  22. hadn't been to vantage in a while and headed out this past weekend to clip some bolts. i only went to the riverviewpark and corn wall areas - but at both of those areas someone had written the names of the areas on the walls with green chalk and labeled the grade of each route at the base of that route. i've seen this in south america (actually with spray paint there) but this was just ridiculous. anyone know anything about this? it didnt take any energy to wash the green chalk off with a little water...i know that place is already mass bolted and cleaned, but come on?
  23. the folks at earth treks climbing gym are a great resource - adrian especially...check out their web site for contact and more info
