How happy are you? ah yes, this from the man who is posting on the big truck thread only days after starting the hybrid car thread. Nice catch. Dude: You are NOT your car.

    Truck ads...

The last two truck ads that bugged me were: A billboard that showed a woman loading groceries into one of those huge trucks that the front and back doors open wide (away from each other) and she was all smiling and shit. The tagline was something about Ford making a man unnecessary. Patently offensive and degrading. The second is a recent one in a magazine that shows a clean truck out in the middle of nowhere and the tagline is something like "Because your soul isn't anywhere near pavement". Uh, yeah, as a matter of fact it's not anywhere near my fuckin truck either. The consistent messaging telling people that material goods are more valuable than people, spirituality, etc, is sad.

  11. Ok, so it turns out I happened to have picked that book up somewhere along the way and had it in my library. I have been reading it since I read your post this morning and it is insightful in many ways. Interestingly, the author discusses risk taking behavior using the framework of a climber (as I think you mentioned in a previous reference). He posits that a climber is not so much addicted to risk; but rather, that he enjoys the sense of excercising control in difficult situations. This is different than enjoying the feeling of being in control. It is not possible to experience a feeling of control unless one is willing to give up the safety of protective routines. By having a doubtful outcome at stake, one is able to influence that outcome. I agree that an additional section on flow posting would be helpful.

    Amen!

This was a case of a tax break that generated very little economic output due to the fat that it didn't actually reduce taxes to the segment of the population where additional spending is required to stimulate an economy. This is yet another case where supply-side economics comes at a heavy cost.
  13. You have to have an IQ over room temperature so I can see your difficulty. The connection was what does climbing bring us that work doesn't - why do we climb? My IQ is only slightly over room temp; and I keep my house at 58. I still am struggling with the link there. I am not convinced that is the underlying question--or maybe just not the only one. (Can you tell I have spare time on my hands today?)
  14. wow. not bad for a jack mormon then, huh?
  15. Who cares?
  16. I am missing the link between "flow", "holiday", and "work" here. More details on your thoughtstream?
  17. Just messing with you. It is actually pretty common in Denmark to marry a second cousin. Marrying a first cousin is not unheard of. But then, its a pretty small country. And because we haven't discussed Mormons enough, we might want to mention that they have a history of some pretty tight-knit clans as well.

  20. I tried em and didn't like em. Not enough flexibility with ordering, etc. And they reuse their boxes so many times it seems a bit disgusting. Reuse is good--unless it is touching my food.
  21. Untrue. All giving is meaningful. Quantifying it does not do anyone any good. It presupposes that you do, indeed, have that ulterior motive--to keep up with the Joneses in giving. Lame.
  22. Whatever. It was a pain in the ass for the corporation I worked for. Nonetheless, I stated that it wasn't really promoted all that much; i.e. there aren't commercials aired for it, there aren't full page ads taken out in the newspaper, etc. Obviously people who work in the field or who are connected with marketing are going to recieve info about it. And I don't mean to sound like I am suporting or defending the USPS. I really don't give a shit. I take the steps not to get too much junk mail; and it sounds like you are interested in the same goal I am. But whatever.
  23. Good thing that didn't happen in America. The story would be integrated into the new "sex ed" classes.
