Due to unfortunate events my partner will be unable to make it to AK this year. He has been gracious enough to offer his already purchased round trip ticket up if I can find someone interested. Current plan is to fly to ANC this Thursday (April 22nd) back home May 8th. If you can swing a portion of those dates (doesn't necessarily need to be the entire time and I am flexible on arrival and departure dates) and would be interested in a quick trip to either the Ruth Gorge, Tokositna or KIA send me a PM or email. Thanks

[TR] Hyalite - The Days of Jack 3/25/2010
John Frieh replied to John Frieh's topic in Ice Climbing Forum
I'm hoping he has the sense to pursue something else but if he does decide to give it a go Ill likely start him on the lightest shortest tool they make... I believe Grivel makes a lil'monster that would be appropriate -
Agree with Fern and Drew. Also would want to see an estimated weight.

Trip: Hyalite - The Days of Jack Date: 3/25/2010 Trip Report: Thanks largely in part to the Family Leave Act of 1993 I loaded up my new and improved family and headed to Bozeman to enjoy some late season ice climbing before they closed the road. Some pics: First Taco Bus: Dillon, MT Dribbles with Drew: climbers right of the kayaker finish I wear a diaper under my action suit so I dont have to stop to pee because I am so light and fast! AlpineStyle4life! First Open Bivy at 9 week old Wall Things Half Bag = old school hardman points Mom off the couch out of the delivery room Ran into Donn and Rodney @ the Royal 7 (but of course!); they were gracious enough to let me tag along one day and shoot pics! Donn likes them apples Rodney likes them apples too The red pill or the blue pill? Rodney on the Matrix Upon retirement most gentlemen relocate to warmer places and take up shuffleboard or golf. Or sit around and bitch on the internet about "the good old days of climbing" Not Donn. Bonus points for blood Load it up! See you guys on the road! Approach Notes: zoom zoom P.S. It would appear you cant post TRs in the kids forum...

A personal favorite of recent "A master at the art of living makes no distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion - he hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues with excellence what he is about and leave others to determine whether he is working or playing. He himself always knows, he is doing both."

Fundamentally you like what you do. I know this having listened to you talk about your profession. Sure taking a year off to fuck off and climb will be great. I wont argue with that. But is exactly one year of climbing going to make you feel good about the next 15-20 years back on the job? Of course not. I'd bet you'll be even more miserable when you return as all you'll think about was how good it was during that year. What you need to do is set better boundaries with your boss. I know how much you work and it's ridiculous. If you actually worked just 45ish a week I bet you wouldn't be considering something so drastic. I would either look into another job function there or market those skills you have acquired to date and find a new employer in a location with better, closer in climbing (Bozeman, SLC, etc etc). Sure you'll take a huge pay cut but you'll be way happier in the long run. And if you truly cant stand it anymore why not instead of doing something super drastic take a more conservative stance: go back to school! Get a MS or PhD or MBA or JD! Will you climb more? Yes! Will you be shooting your career in the foot? No! And at the end of the day keep in mind climbing is a selfish, hollow, time intensive activity that might make you happy but more than likely will only make you want more often at the expense of others PS: for a fit person you deadlift like a weakling PPS: if you have a couple grand in the bank you should be shopping for a house right now

Word. Cody is the goods. Speaking of I may or may not be available for a trip in early April. Let me know when you have solid dates!
-
FYI: as a part of the Hyalite road plowing agreement they now gate/close the Hyalite road on April 1st.

Nothing in the Sawtooths has been claimed as a VI. Curtis Ridge didnt feel like a VI to me. Some of the routes that went up on the east face of Liberty Bell in and around 1967 would have qualified for for VI status at the time.
