  1. If we rap from this tree ledge back down, can can it be done in one rap to the first (snag) ledge and a second rap to the ground? (using a single 60m) Thanks for the info guys, I'm getting stoked! I hope it dries out. I suppose if we need to bring tennis shoes then someone's got to climb with a pack on....
  2. I'm heading out to Beacon Rock on Tuesday to do some stuff, probably the SE corner. I'm just going off of Olson's "Portland Climbs" book for beta, can ayone offer me anything more? Gear advice, number of pitches (looks to be about 5) and especially walk-off/rappel options would be great to hear. He says you can exit "into the woods" but will this get us to the trail back down the bottom? Anyone bringing tennis shoes with the on the climb for a walk-off? Thanks! I've don't some multi-pitch before, but nothing more than three pitches. Does this route seem like a good option for leading my first grade III climb?
  3. Boston Basin?
  4. There are Wolverines in the North Cascades, I know several folsk who have seen them, and I think as Dru said, biologists would agree. There are still a lot of old mine remains in and around Cascade Pass/Horshoe Basin. One can find explosives equipment, trapping supplies, and ranching supplies in some very remote places. Obviously the #1 legend is the Sasquatch, but I aint buying that. I'd love to hear the evidence behind there being radioactive material near cascade pass. I've seen some indian petroglyphics, but I they aren't secret to only climbers. IMO people are in general just too weak-willed to ever maintain vast conspiracies and networks of secrets. If there were Aliens/bigfoot/etc... and a lot of people were in on the secret, some chump would have spilled teh beans in a tell-all book or TV appearance, and made his million dollars, as opposed to being poor, silent, anonymous, and "in" on the secret.
  5. I've got a few gear questions, maybe you all can straighten things out for me. If tying my own runners with regular 1" tubular webbing, is a rabbit runner tied with overhand knots weaker than a sling tied with a water or a beer knot? Rabbit runners allow me to use less webbing for equal lengths. When Wiregate 'biners get stressed under a lot of weight, do they bend to the point where the end of the gate is pulling on the "hook" of the carabiner? If not, I don't see what load-bearing function the gate serves at all. When using slung WC hexes, has anyone tried pulling the loop of dyneema through the hex some or most of the way before placing the piece? This way in the event of a fall, the dyneema loop must be pulled through the drilled holes in the hex before the hex is really stressed. This would only work when placing the piece endwise, or such that the holes don't touch the rock. This would seem to act similarly to a screamer (although absorbing less energy, but still some). Thanks for the input. -Blake

    Name My Dog

Yeah, there was a dog shown in one of the Banff Film Fests from a few years ago (and the movie Front Range Freaks) who was a great scrambler and a fearless downclimber as well.

    Squirrels

That is a good trap, the beauty being that it keeps working after being set and catching a mouse. However, I once got to a cabin along Bridge Creek and noticed a horrible smell upon entering. The last person to stay there had left just such a trap, and they'd been succesful, but not around to despose of their succes.
  9. Wednesday @ 8pm there will be a show about Conrad Anker, Krakauer, and their team climbing Vinson Massif shown on PBS.

    Squirrels

You'd be a good guy to have around guarding camp from hungry alpine snaffles.
  11. Professor Bignuts I wonder how many of these could substitute for our porn names.
  12. Thanks for all the info, I think we'll head to Rocky Butte or Broughton on Thursday when things might not be real dry, and once I see how comfotable he is outside, Beacon sounds like the place to go a few days later after some clear weather.
  13. yeah, that would help. What book is it, and how can i meet you to borrow it?
  14. 20% off anything at the Evil Empire: coupon code CFHY4(good until Christmas)
  15. I think he meant John Roper's website..
  16. It looks like we have about a week of warm dry weather ahead, bad for skiing and water next summer, good for rock climbing now. If i want to take a gym-climber friend of mine and go do some sport or trad in the portland area that isn't too tough, where would you recommend? Any online maps of these places? (i'm trying to avoid paying for a book i'll use a couple times) Just from checking out the route info on RC.com I'd say that the left hanging Gardens Wall @ Broughton's is the best place, any thoughts? P.S. to the moderators: move this to Newbies or Oregon boards if you want.
  17. yes they can, get them. preferably on dyneema.
  18. Ending @ 4:00 PM today was a show on msnbc called "adventurer" and the last part of the hour-long show was a very cool piece on ice climbing. I'm sure it will be shown again, but the msnbc webpage is impossible to navigate. Check it out if you get a chance.
  19. gunsight...
  20. We already have to pay to use and visit other public lands (state parks, National Parks, campgrounds) but it seems to me that such high prices and harsh fines for visiting national forests is crazy. We would have a lot more money to maintain and FREELY visit our national public lands if we quit paying timber companies and other corporations to steal the resources off of them.
  21. using google and limiting it to "site:www.cascadeclimbers.com" is how i search this site now. it works great.
  22. IT seems like Texplorer and a few of the other good booty-hounds could compile a nice rack just using free found gear!
  23. I have silvretta easy-go 555s and i believe that they are climbing boot compatible, although scarpa lasers do the job for me.
  24. Not my auction but 10 nice QDs and a sling for that price is pretty good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50814&item=7119677977&rd=1 I'm sure some cc.commie can use this stuff.
  25. IS this the #15 through Surrey?
