  1. And Canadian uber-curler Shannon Kleibrink! She’s so famous now she’s thinking of quitting her job at the cosmetics counter at the Bay. The training demands for that sport are phenomenal.
  2. It's NEVER the wrong time to tell the tale of a cool climb in a far-off place (Peru?) with such gorgeous photos.
  3. I'm going with Index or Baring.
  4. You’d think so, wouldn’t you? Thing is, Erie doesn’t have the same kind of issues with hungry coyotes hanging out at the top of the crags as they do over in Vantage.
  5. PM sent
  6. Yeah, I was thinking of the summit wall, with its easy climbs and fabulous views. Given a little caution it sounds pretty reasonable, especially since the major concerns are behind once you reach the belay ledge. Now all I have to do is get the kids as fired up to go as I am to take them! Thanks for the info, guys.
  7. I've thought of taking my kids there, but recalled that most of the approaches & belay sopts have some exposure (probably more troublesome to me than them). What did you find?
  8. VM is one crafty species - I'm told the stems can photosynthesize during winter. If you choose to put it in your yard, you better not change your mind!
  9. I guess I'm the odd guy whose feet were treated right by plastics (Asolo Supersofts - long out of production). After years in leathers with many "waterproofing" products, plastics first allowed me to spend a day or more in the snow with warm and semi-dry feet. Of course, if you plan on doing much climbing, you will eventually want both kinds.
  10. Hmmm…the type of climbing you describe is where I would be MOST likely to wear plastics. Why are you targeting non-plastics – long approaches, scrambling, weight?
  11. My new goal: Climb something Sky and his friends can't ski!
  12. Nothing like a little conjugation after a day in the mountains, eh? Good day's work!
  13. The mountains always called – it just took me a while to get there. At 15, I was the “kid” on a Parks and Rec climb of Three Finger Jack. Trip leader Todd was a legendary for having done a Smith wall with a bivy - SOLO! The climb was exposed and Todd top-roped me up the summit pinnacle: “Good job - first of many summits!” Got soaked on the walk out, but I knew I’d found something.
  14. What shops in Seattle stock lots of cordage - besides the empiREI?
  15. Good stuff - thanks. Though the resewing option is pretty reasonable, I think I'll do the double retie myself.

  17. You're an imbecile. Seriously! Seriously? Sure the “emancipation” part is all self-help groovy and looks great on the bumpers of the Four-runners at the food coop. But I’d love to hear what not fearing atomic energy has to do with mental slavery or anything else in this song. Maybe it would just come clear with a little more herbal therapy….
  18. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'Cause none of them can stop the time..."
  19. I need to replace the cord on my old Friends and I’ve read 5-6 mm perlon or Kevlar cord is the thing. Any comments on what works best and where to buy it in Seattle – preferably somewhere that carries a bunch of colors.
  20. Any connection to the ‘Quin Conehead Pre-Memorial Route’ at Darrington? Must be an interesting story behind that. Anyway, don’t know the guy, but hope the news is better than for the other dude you were asking about today.
  21. Great reminder we don't have to be on a mountain trip to experience the sublime.
  22. PM in your box.
  23. Before you get out onto some of the glacier routes mentioned above (great list BTW), you should get some basic glacier travel instruction beforehand. Not sure what is available in PDX these days, but the parks & rec program might have a cheap option as do guide services if you have the $. Same advice for getting started on rock - start with some expert instruction. Mentors are great too if you can find one.
  24. UB40 (they did until Labor of Love) Beagles Disc golf THC
  25. Shouldn't this thread have been posted under The Gear Critic...Mods?
