The mountains always called – it just took me a while to get there. At 15, I was the “kid” on a Parks and Rec climb of Three Finger Jack. Trip leader Todd was a legendary for having done a Smith wall with a bivy - SOLO! The climb was exposed and Todd top-roped me up the summit pinnacle: “Good job - first of many summits!” Got soaked on the walk out, but I knew I’d found something.

What shops in Seattle stock lots of cordage - besides the empiREI?
-
Good stuff - thanks. Though the resewing option is pretty reasonable, I think I'll do the double retie myself.

You're an imbecile. Seriously! Seriously? Sure the “emancipation” part is all self-help groovy and looks great on the bumpers of the Four-runners at the food coop. But I’d love to hear what not fearing atomic energy has to do with mental slavery or anything else in this song. Maybe it would just come clear with a little more herbal therapy….

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'Cause none of them can stop the time..."

I need to replace the cord on my old Friends and I’ve read 5-6 mm perlon or Kevlar cord is the thing. Any comments on what works best and where to buy it in Seattle – preferably somewhere that carries a bunch of colors.

Any connection to the ‘Quin Conehead Pre-Memorial Route’ at Darrington? Must be an interesting story behind that. Anyway, don’t know the guy, but hope the news is better than for the other dude you were asking about today.

Great reminder we don't have to be on a mountain trip to experience the sublime.

Before you get out onto some of the glacier routes mentioned above (great list BTW), you should get some basic glacier travel instruction beforehand. Not sure what is available in PDX these days, but the parks & rec program might have a cheap option as do guide services if you have the $. Same advice for getting started on rock - start with some expert instruction. Mentors are great too if you can find one.

Shouldn't this thread have been posted under The Gear Critic...Mods?

That settles the Timex question (assuming PITA = POS) Nike advertises something called Zero Drift Technology, which makes it sound like you never have to calibrate. Too good to be true is not something that wins me over, but sounds like you've been happy with yours. Might give Ebay a look too - thanks Ketch

FYI: Folks posting here span quite a range of skill and ambition levels, so don’t sweat that. And from my limited experience, you generally won’t get smacked around until you stir the pot a little yourself. Whether you decide to fling mud or not, there is plenty of info and amusement to be had. So welcome to the fray Spineguy

I agree you will not regret adding some SLCs, even if you can only do it gradually. They are quick to place - a real plus on mountain routes and are much better than nuts and tri-cams at staying put, regardless of pull direction.

Thanks guys I should have thought of the Campmor route and yes they have a bunch of deals. The bargain models seem to be Timex. Anybody know if they hold up (can't forget the old "takes a lickin.." ads)?

Looking to replace my recently deceased Casio Don't care about heart-rates, air temp or Ipod compatability, and don't want to spend over $200. Any thoughts?

Yup. Reading the letter of concern from the OSU profs (some of whom I studied with years ago) convinced me that Donato’s paper has some serious shortcomings and/or overstatements, and I wonder whether Science either a) got reviewers poorly qualified to evaluate this particular study or b) ignored their input, as Foraker suggested. That being said, the draconian request to delay printing is clearly motivated much more by political and economical sensitivities than by any serious risk to the science. The decision to go this route rather than submitting a response to Science following publication is very poor form. These profs have decades of research insight behind them, but need to rest the old-guard antics and let some new voices inform the discussion.

Probably March of 2004. In February 2004 Snocrummie snowpack measured 80", current Snocrummie depth is 83" - Not quite seven feet, genius. DH – I salute you for sniffing out blatant lies and exaggerations such as these. Could you please tell us all if this kind of thing is rampant once you check through the rest of the posts on this website? I shudder at the thought of it NTC – hope your trip works out

Has Kemp finally graduated from rehab? Dear Dumbass: I was refering to Shaun Alexander, Seattle football star. You, with your head up your dumbass, were thinking of Shawn Kemp, former Seattle basketball star. Thanks for straightening me out, JZ! But since you do remember that Shawn, wouldn't you rank Kemp & Payton challenging the Jordan-in-his-prime Bulls for the NBA crown up on your list, too?

I will guess it is the rock right off I-84 that is presently named after the barnyard animal it fails to resemble. I'll take "Semi-climbable volcanic pinnacles of Oregon" for 200, Alex. -
Don't know about that type, but the old-school Peet boot dryers (http://www.madsens1.com/peetdry.htm) are pretty tough to beat. They dry em out from the inside.

Umm...no. "Intensity" would presumably invovle inches or mm. By the way, in Bham, at 23 days straight yesterday we broke our record. And no end in sight, baby!
