  1. That settles the Timex question (assuming PITA = POS) Nike advertises something called Zero Drift Technology, which makes it sound like you never have to calibrate. Too good to be true is not something that wins me over, but sounds like you've been happy with yours. Might give Ebay a look too - thanks Ketch

    Tricams...?

FYI: Folks posting here span quite a range of skill and ambition levels, so don’t sweat that. And from my limited experience, you generally won’t get smacked around until you stir the pot a little yourself. Whether you decide to fling mud or not, there is plenty of info and amusement to be had. So welcome to the fray Spineguy

    Tricams...?

I agree you will not regret adding some SLCs, even if you can only do it gradually. They are quick to place - a real plus on mountain routes and are much better than nuts and tri-cams at staying put, regardless of pull direction.
  4. Thanks guys I should have thought of the Campmor route and yes they have a bunch of deals. The bargain models seem to be Timex. Anybody know if they hold up (can't forget the old "takes a lickin.." ads)?
  5. Looking to replace my recently deceased Casio Don't care about heart-rates, air temp or Ipod compatability, and don't want to spend over $200. Any thoughts?

    Anybody at OSU?

Yup. Reading the letter of concern from the OSU profs (some of whom I studied with years ago) convinced me that Donato’s paper has some serious shortcomings and/or overstatements, and I wonder whether Science either a) got reviewers poorly qualified to evaluate this particular study or b) ignored their input, as Foraker suggested. That being said, the draconian request to delay printing is clearly motivated much more by political and economical sensitivities than by any serious risk to the science. The decision to go this route rather than submitting a response to Science following publication is very poor form. These profs have decades of research insight behind them, but need to rest the old-guard antics and let some new voices inform the discussion.
  7. Probably March of 2004. In February 2004 Snocrummie snowpack measured 80", current Snocrummie depth is 83" - Not quite seven feet, genius. DH – I salute you for sniffing out blatant lies and exaggerations such as these. Could you please tell us all if this kind of thing is rampant once you check through the rest of the posts on this website? I shudder at the thought of it NTC – hope your trip works out
  8. Has Kemp finally graduated from rehab? Dear Dumbass: I was refering to Shaun Alexander, Seattle football star. You, with your head up your dumbass, were thinking of Shawn Kemp, former Seattle basketball star. Thanks for straightening me out, JZ! But since you do remember that Shawn, wouldn't you rank Kemp & Payton challenging the Jordan-in-his-prime Bulls for the NBA crown up on your list, too?
  9. Has Kemp finally graduated from rehab?

    Art Collectors?

Didn't that flasher go on to become mayor of Portland?
  11. I will guess it is the rock right off I-84 that is presently named after the barnyard animal it fails to resemble. I'll take "Semi-climbable volcanic pinnacles of Oregon" for 200, Alex.
  12. Don't know about that type, but the old-school Peet boot dryers (http://www.madsens1.com/peetdry.htm) are pretty tough to beat. They dry em out from the inside.
  13. Umm...no. "Intensity" would presumably invovle inches or mm. By the way, in Bham, at 23 days straight yesterday we broke our record. And no end in sight, baby!
  14. Indeed! Note the effortless command of rainfall duration concepts displayed in the following: "...it rained 24/7 straight for 93 days..."
  15. Thanks Arc - sent you a PM. Nobody else with a singleton out there?
  16. Recent experience suggests it could be different now after the Xmas monsoon. We darn near drove the mini-van to Hannegan Pass trailhead (higher than Illabot) on New Years day! Not to - the approach from the Cascade side looks pretty darn scenic, too.
  17. Lost one in the brush and am looking for a usable partner. Ideally looking for a lightweight "scissor-type" that would fit a size 12 boot, but I can't really be too choosy, can I? Shoot me a PM if you have something.
  18. Have you considered coming in from the Illabot Creek side? I'll bet you can drive higher and closer that way. I would think that road might be snow free, but you might check with the USFS. We skied in that way and camped at Enjar lakes some years back. I think that was the Snowking route in Burgdorfer's Cascade ski mountaineering book that came out in the 90s. Great area.
  19. not a bouldery start..... Ding Ding! And a cheap cross-thread play.
  20. Hmmmm... so the problems that DON'T have "only one hard move"...are they be considered to have a "climb start"
  21. The numbers in NWMJ show a pretty sharp drop in '04, alright. I had also heard that there has been a longer term shift in NCNP climbing numbers away from the deep back-country areas (e.g. Pickets) in favor of shorter approach areas such as Cascade Pass and Shuksan. Maybe a ranger or other knowledgable person can comment whether this is true.
  22. Yup - gorgeous at dusk. Great place to get fired up for Redoubt, too.
  23. Easy to spend. And you never have to wait in an exchange line
  24. What do you guys like so much about Aliens? For small units, I've been real happy with my smaller Friends, but they're going to need replacing as some point.
  25. I'm with Blake on the Logan call. All the Cascade Pass peaks laid out, with the sprawling Boston glacier in front. Turn around you get the dry Washington Pass and Pasayten country. Only advantage Sahale has is the quick-n-easy approach (OK, OK, 15 miles shorter)!
