  1. I'm troubled to see that the Legislative and Executive branches of the Federal Government are meddling in the processes of the courts. This does not bode well for the future of our system. I'm vexed as to why almost everyone involved is not honoring the wishes of this poor woman.
  2. Canon ELPH S500. Don't know about the cold, but otherwise, great for the price and weight. Good battery life too.
  3. Personally, I think eVent is a more breathable fabric. Much more, matter of fact.
  4. Hey, that's it! Thanks so much.
  5. Does anyone know if you can still get NWFP, or is it the $85 or nothing? I can't afford $85!
  6. A few summers ago, I visited Temple Canyon, where I saw this big wedding-cake looking rock that was referred to as "Dartounian Tower." It's one of the first things you see once you come out of the trees at the top of the scramble up from Nada. I haven't been able to find any information on a piece of rock by that name, and wonder if anyone can tell me other names it might be called.
  7. Thanks FF. Now if the other clubs could do the same thing, how cool would that be? It would be almost as cool as not having multiple chapters of the Mountaineers in the same area (Icicle, anyone?) on the same weekend.
  8. Just checking in re the login problems. Adjusted cookie settings on laptop, and have cc.com set to "accepted cookies" in Mozilla. Also just got a new home compyooder, installed Mozilla, starting with a clean slate, still having same problems there, and not with any site other than cc. Also have same problem with running IE. Weird!
  9. Ahem, yes.
  10. And I would think that if you are going to debate the facts, that you would use actual facts. It's totally fine to argue it on a philosophical level where facts are a little less important, but it was your idea to get into the realm of the factual.
  11. Don't you little miss me, you asshat. I looked up the Act before I spoke about it. You didn't. Nothing I could find indicated that mechanized was added later. I do not believe the Act has ever been amended.
  12. The NCCC's website makes no mention of supporting such an idea. Nor have I ever heard of any land manager pushing for it. NCCC policy I don't have that old guidebook but you could very well be right. I'm just not at all convinced that he's active anymore.
  13. They had bicycles AND wheelbarrows in 1964. If you can prove to me that the Act has been amended, then please do so, otherwise, I'm not conceding the point. I don't think Harvey Manning is writing books anymore either, nor do I know of any group currently pushing for Wilderness designation in the DD or closure of the Cascade River Road. P.S. The word "solitude" occurs only once in the Act, and it's in the definition of Wilderness: If you are going to argue this with facts, please use actual ones rather than ones you made up.
  14. Actually, that's all written down in the Act. I think the horse may be out of the barn on that issue.
  15. Has anyone seen an updated map as to what roads have and have not yet been repaired from the 2003 flood/storm dealo?
  16. montrail D7s on clearance at Hikey Town
  17. Dark Divide is kind of a rarity in SW Wa in that it has not been completely crisscrossed with roads. It's been a favorite of conservation groups for years, but I don't think I've ever heard of any talk of making it a Wilderness, nor do I think it would ever become one. There has been a push to leave it roadless, which is obviously not the same thing.
  18. Widernesses are not "gerrymandered," silly. They have wavy lines because they follow natural geography (much more so now than in 1899 when MRNP was formed) and have to be drawn to the exclusion of roads, and in some cases, inholdings. This is not some vast left-wing conspiracy!
  19. Here is a website with some information about the proposed Wilderness. Peter, I'm not sure what you hope to accomplish with your theoretical Rorsach Test of Washington's Wildernesses. Very few people would be able to call out the chronology of their creation, let alone even name them all.
  20. Hey Winter, that's very interesting. I did not know about that! The FS people I have spoken with never mention that. Can you direct me to more information like that? I'm always interested in reading up on issues like this.
  21. The FS gets its budget from Congress. The FS does not keep the proceeds from timber sales, they go back into the General Fund. Once upon a time, the FS generated a fair amount of revenue from timber sales, and was pretty well-funded by Congress. Nowadays, for a number of reasons, the FS is not generating much revenue from timber sales, and coincidentally (?!?) is not very well-funded. Additionally, the national priorities do not lie in conservation or in the environment. In six hours of presidential and vice presidential debates last fall, there was exactly ONE question about the environment. It is just not what people care about. I do not much care for having to designate in order to avoid lawsuits and deal with budget constraints, but if that is what it takes, then so be it. Criz, thanks a lot for weighing in. Keep talking.
  22. Peaks: somewhere in the Cascades, a long time ago. Probably involved brush. Rock: mid-late 1990s. I should stick to peaks and choss.
  23. If REI stops selling climbing gear, won't more people go to Pro Mountain Sports for climbing gear? Seems like the unintended consequences might have some payoff.....
  24. OUCH!!!!!
  25. Air Berjaya leaving Tioman Island I did not enjoy this takeoff, especially after watching the plane land. I wish I could get the image tag function to work.
