REI gear is OK. It works for casual users (eg backpacking), but I feel that for more gear-intensive, more severe conditions situations more specialized gear is worth it. My only beef with REI is the lack of climbing gear. I can deal with clueless salespeople, I just ask them a question they can't answer, and they leave me alone.

That would be my wife. She and my daughter are the same way. They are completely unable to distill a series of events to the essential and tell a story. They get mad when my attention wanders. That's the one! She can take up to half an hour to describe an event that originally took only a few seconds to transpire. Once, while listening to her ramblings and attempting to watch the TV at the same time, I raised the remote control and pointed it at her face while desperately and repeatedly pressing the "mute" button. ....I slept on the sofa that night. That's funny. Too bad no that night.

I just read an article by Andy Kirkpatrick, who is the only guy I know of who writes unbiased articles on how climbing gear works in the real world. He says 1. fill power measurements differ from country to country. 2. he says that 800 fill down is available from only one or two sources, and is damn expensive 3. whoever claims 900 fill down is on crack and works for a sleeping bag company. Now, I have an inclination to believe this guy, as he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. What do you down specialists say to this?

Actually, the force exerted by gravity on the dumbell actually "pulls" on every infinitesimal piece of the dumbell. Add up all the forces by integrating, and the EFFECT is that of the force being on the center of mass. Saying that gravity pulls only on the center of mass is incorrect.

Why is it that when people are online they get so immature? I swear, the stuff that goes on here is what I would expect from teenagers or pre-teenagers. Races for pagetops, flaming for the sake of flaming, juvenile insults, excuses and chestbeating galore, hyper-inflated egos, etc, etc, etc. AND I have reason to believe that the majority of the posters here are (supposedly) adults.
