    Netbooks?

My 'partner' uses one of those (Asus EEE 901 - 9 inch screen) for her primary work computer. Secondary monitor and keyboard in the office, easily portable, kind of a cross between a PDA and a laptop. Not bad. Currently in warranty though. I want one of my own.
  2. Here's a good one: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1980-01-01/The-Forgotten-Zeppelin-Knot.aspx
  3. I have a pair from climbingskinsdirect.com, and am happy so far.
  4. Rock Climbing dot com already had this discussion. So did Cavechat dot org. Petzl also has something to help us out. Click on any of the pulleys to swap it out, see the change in force on the upper right. I have found a great diagram to explain it as well, but it is needing to be scanned...
  5. So it's not got anything to do with Bush after 8 YEARS, but we can blame Obama after 5 WEEKS?!
  6. Tremper's book was an epiphany for me. Really good stuff, and a great writing style.

    Rope Washing

Here's a radical suggestion, not sure what I think. Anybody got a pull tester? http://www.onrope1.com/RopeWashing.htm
  8. My first thought when I saw your thread title was Memory-Map. It's about the best software I have used. Then I saw you have a mac. Good luck with that... Can you run Windows software? It seems like most Mac owners I know can do that...

    GPS

Very happy with mine. With the map screen and the high sensitivity I find I use the unit a lot. Decent battery life too, at least for day trips...
  10. H.A.R.T: http://www.amazon.com/Angle-Rescue-Techniques-Pocket-Package/dp/0323019145/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a My library was able to get it form another library for me and I thougth it was a pretty good text. I've got it on order now... Life on a Line is a British cave rescue text, but is also very good.
  11. Brian, the drop loop system is often taught and sometimes used by Canadian guides. There are advantages and disadvantages to most every system. I think you've made your point that you don't think that this is the best system, but please, let's discuss the OP's question, which is "Where is the best place to put the pulley?" Everybody, please, let's steer away from the flaming and arguements. . . . My RR mentors have taught me that the best place for your best pulley is as close to the haul team as possible. Basically an inefficient pulley gets it's inefficiency multiplied at every friction point downstream... If you have access to a copy of Life on a Line 2 (cave rescue text) it has a good explanation of how this works.
  12. Any idea what it's like to start from the bottom instead of traversing in?
  13. BCA has an avalanche airbag that is supposed to be $500.
  14. PM me closer to the time you come.
  15. Best food these days IMO is the new Drift Izakaya Japanese style pub. You must also be sure to experience Rafters Pub. Best nachos in town. In bounds, well, hope you like tree skiing, and hope we get more snow before you show up. It's been a bit dry lately. Slackcountry is pretty obvious, with 3 main access points. It's a great drive from Mazama. Cross at the Frontier/Patterson border (24h). When are you here?
  16. Look for adjustable vents, and find one that fits the best. If it's not comfy you'll end up not wearing it.

    So Damn Sick!

of being so fucking sick. UGH! What to do for deep bronchial coughs that produce foamy phlegm, and make my chest hurt? Been steaming my head every hour or so - helps. Thank goodness for Canada - Cough Syrup with CODEINE helps me sleep... any other good tips for me?
  18. This looks like the best option for the real story with two fo the skiers as well as Tim Jones of NSAR weighing in on what happened. http://www.northshorerescue.com/blog/2009/01/four-rescued-on-grouse-mountain.html Purely in my opinion, sounds like Grouse overreacted.

    Facebook

JayB = there is prett much that option here. The system that replaced PMs is a Private Forum system. I think the only real problem is you have to invite everyone from the start... you can't add. And FB is a PITA waste of time IMO. Email and flickr do everything better, and with much simpler interfaces. Not to mention, GASP! the telephone!
  20. Parks Canada has nothing to do with this issue, as the Bugaboos are not a national park.
  21. Lots of pics and some speculation over at TGR.
