  1. I have often wondered if we are going to see an nasty increase in some sort of lung disease amongst indoor climbers, and particularly amongst gym employees. Particles can be inert and still cause lung problems. I think this is how asbestos works it's nastiness. Any reason chalk won't do the same?
  2. A new find for me www.avalanchemapping.org Looks interesting, and there are some nice maps for those of you so inclined. Mostly foucused on CO and UT.
  3. Close, I just read that article too, and the tunnel would actually only be 200 feet down, if I remember correctly, not 40-50 off the sea floor. They said the only obstacle at this point is cost. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ New York to London... 1 hr.
  4. I have never had trouble finding breakable crust or other funky snow to ski at the lifts. To me, it's all skiing. There's good and bad about all of it. Those who complain about the lifts, well, you probably aren't at the best areas... My best pow lines are in bounds. I like the lower risk of death. I tend to ski more conservativeline on the b/c. I have been slack the past couple of seasons, having a pass will do that to you. Now that I am kicking more ass, I am excited to tour again and get some gnarlier lines that I only looked at before. Like this one: It's all good.
  5. Maybe they found the nodder.
  6. try PM'ing murraysovereign, he knows a lot of the Squampton rec crowd...
  7. Simple answer, you can't arrest on ice. Too hard, too fast.
  8. Well, it's not the Spring Glissade In... but I bet fun could be had. Let's see, you could go snowshoeing, or alpinisming, or running around naked in the snow, or burning things, or drinking yourself silly, or roasting HC over an open fire, or building a sauna (see naked in snow reference), or sparking a bowl, washing with soap... Nahh, you're probably right, no fun to be had for non sliders.

I like it. Newfoundland Police Department = Royal Newfoundland Constabulary = police who do not carry guns. Link Actually I think they might these days, but not when I was growing up.
  11. I got one hint, sleep helps... ie no 2AM chatter sessions.
  12. Do it! Be there! Everyone who slides should come play!
  13. Try this page , or this one, or do a Google Search for the guys in the film, and you will find lots more crazy shiznit.

    worn rungs

Say you are a party of three. The first guy leads, and lowers off QD, second guy TRs and lowers off QD, third guy climbs up and lowers off chains. You now have at least 2/3 less wear then TRing off the chains direct. Suddenly those chains that are only good for a year are lasting at least[/] three years. I would call that a signifigant impact.

    worn rungs

Easy solution to that^: Lead, thread rope through chains, then use a QD clipped in to the bolt. The rope hangs off the QD, and when it is time for the inexperienced second to clean it, there is nothing to it, as it is already threaded for lowering.
  17. Dreaming of skiing... and packing my house up to move.
  18. Fair enough,my bad I thought you were trying to start the annual debate.
  19. Copied from Backcountry Magazine, the: Mistay Lodge energy Bar recipe... 1 cup Peanut Butter 1 cup Honey 1 cup Cocoa 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup shredded coconut 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup sesame seeds Measure out the fruits etc, as you will need to work quickly when mixing all together at the end. Melt the peanut butter and honey together, then add cocoa. Mix (with hands if neccesary) in fruit, coconut, and seeds, then press into a 9x13 pan. Cool. I found them just a little bit oily, so I may try adding some rice crispies or the like to dry them out a bit next time.
  20. Hey Gowans, what would you say would be a reasonable budget to enjoy oneself? Say ski 2 out of every 3 days, nice dinner couple times a week, clean room, eat cheap rest of the time? Get plastered once a week or so, maybe do a little side trip somwhere? $20/day? $50/day? $200/day?
  21. GirlBomber Lotsmore good reading here.
  22. I made bars for <$1 Canadian that taste way better than anything you buy.
  23. jimmyo- I have gone through almost the same path as you. Last winter I put Intuition liners in my old t-2s. I liked the upgrade in fit, and felt it made me ski better. This winter though, I started to feel like I was overpowering the boots quite often. Now I ski the T-1, and primarily the MegaBang. I have kept the old t-2, as I am unsure of whether I want to tour in the big boot. Ener-G has a funny flex, it gets real stiff at a certain point, and while I never skied it, I did not like the feel of it in the shop. I think that the boot has been a big factor in my recent jump in ability level. That and the skis. Well matched IMO. So, what do I like about the T-1? Well, the real buckles rock. I find I t-turn more often, because teleing is actually much easier in big boots than little ones. I can carve on hardpack. I ski a lot faster, with more confidence. Dislike? The weight. Even with the thermo liners, I feel the weight of them, although I would say a day on the lifts is less tiring overall. They are lower volume than my old boots, so the fit is still not dialed yet. Me 6'2", 215lbs my skis - 185 MegaB, and 188 Mira binding - G3 Targa.
  24. true... true. I meant in comparision to other risers. Of course, if he wanted light he'd have gone AT.
