I've now been burned twice by customs in the last month. First, i sold a cheap digital camera to a guy through ebay for $70 US. I paid UPS $11 US to ship the camera surface and then customs hit the guy up for $45 CDN. $9 CDN for customs and a $36 service fee. After a cople weeks of wrangling they brought down the charge to $30 CDN total. Next, I just went to buy some gear from MEC for a trip on July 7th and they can't guarantee they can get it here in time because of customs. They can only send it surface and it would have to be delivered by next thursday with the holiday and all. Why the hell is it such a big deal to ship things from Canada to the US and vice-versa?! It's exactly afghanistan. I'd be up for annexing that damn country if I wasn't so sure we'd fuck it up. Maybe Canda can be a good capitalist and just buy us. All they would have to do is assume all debt, right?

oh boo hoo. You're a RETAIL CLERK. You aren't worth more then the $ they pay you because you are replaceable. There are plenty of people out there that can do your job. It's like that in almost every industry. Now why would REI pay slightly more for their clerks then anyone else? Well, they might think that paying a little more to keep a few experienced clerks around is good for selling gear. Some people actually can spot the ones who know what they are talking about versus the ones who can only read the labels. However, in a store like REI, you only need a few 'rockstars'. Just like in the world I work in, you only need a few 'rockstar' programmers, the rest are becoming replaceable, which is why you're seeing dev salaries stabalize and in a lot of cases, come down. Unionizing does not help the situation. It is your job as a person seeking more money to make yourself more valuable. It's not the company's job. Having said tha, I just made an order from MEC

We had giant cracks in our walls, lost a few servers, and our buliding was red tagged (though after the landlord passed the inspectors some cash it was amazingly marked "all good") We were working last night and a coworker felt that one.
