Baker opens on Thursday!!! I'll be there by Saturday! Here is the official announcement: MT. BAKER WILL BEGIN OPERATION ON THURSDAY NOV. 20th at 9:00 A.M. We received huge amounts of snow this weekend and the ski area looks great! On Thursday, we will be running chairs 1,2,3,5 and 8, and we anticipate being in full normal midweek operation on Friday. With the great mountain forecast calling for even more snow later this week, we anticipate being in FULL OPERATION OUT OF BOTH BASE AREAS FOR THE WEEKEND

It was a good show, though they didn't really talk in depth about the rangers personally. That would have been more interesting to me then all the stuff on the host (*drama* I know I was the slowest member of the team, but I had to push on *drama*). It's pretty amazing how many rescues they made nad how nobody was hurt. Wasn't sure whether the Czechs they saved were assholes or just misunderstood. Also, they could've made it 100 times better by either putting Lucy Liu on the mountain or naked.

I have a gemini and I don't like it one bit. It's bulky, the LED is not bright enough, and the halogen is barely brighter then the LED in my experience.

Can you detail anything more on any of those? Like "Always try to keep your body as close to the rock as possible" or "It's better to reach higher then wider with your feet" or whatever. Again, I'm not saying that these things exist, just asking.

I'd strongly recomend you make a concerted effort to learn avalanche forecasting and not rely on an "expert" you met on the internet. I found myself in some akward situations with some "experts" I found on this very website. I'm sure I'm not alone in that regard It's really not rocket science and there are a few basic avalanche courses you could complete prior to Feb/March which is the most common time to do a winter climb of Rainier. It is possible to perform a pretty accurate analysis of the snowpack without getting into the facceting or metamorphism of the snow particles, just the basics. I plan on taking an avalanche class as well, but it'd be nice to have somebody who also knows a thing or two about snowpack.
