Every trip, climb, etc. has a set of associated music that was going on, over & over in yr head...some of my best musical memories are because the trip was great, but sometimes the 'background music' made the trip great. My favorite: VW beetle, smoke inside...Neil Young's Like a Hurricane comes on the radio... Then me & my bud surf a head-high break all alone for a good 2 hours before anyone else discovers the waves. Probably too numerous to count. Seems like there's always Hot Water Music involved, though. Powerful shit; you sort of automatically reach for it sometimes; it's just good, intense, honest music that grabs you by the fucking shirt and screams "ARE YOU LIVING FULLY, MOTHERFUCKER? SEE THAT YOU ARE!". Heading home from Smith after finally redpointing that project or a good day just knocking off pitches, gorgeous sunset over the Cascades, a plate of asada tacos from Martina's balanced on your lap, lovely lady at your side, and damn, some HWM knockin' your eardrums. Wouldn't miss it.

Displays of mental midgetry on this bulletin board have been the hallmark of our bolt-clipping brothers from the beginning, however. What I find to be far more disturbing is the insulting language recently directed toward Dwayner. In every instance of Dwayner catching shit on this website that Dr. Flash Amazing has seen, it's been due to his tactless expression of his ego-heavy opinion. Whether unconditionally and blindly bashing sport climbing, deriding other people's intelligence, ethics, or opinions, or slamming this site, Dwayner gets exactly what he gives. Your accusation of "mental midgetry" being limited to bolt-clippers is a rather short-statured bit of reasoning itself, and holds no water. There are precious few members of this site (none?) who haven't at least dipped their toes in the ever-tempting stream of name-calling, shit-talking, finger-pointing, everything-bashing, crassly juvenile "humor", and a litany of other idiocies, yourself and Dwayner certainly not excluded. DFA reminding us twice each week that he’s yo-yoed his way up a .13a bolt trail? PP’s mind-numbing attempts to deduce truth from fantasy? Gimme a break! DFA hasn't set Sportiva-squeezed toes to rock since he started posting here, so it's unlikely you've been getting this alleged flood of sport-climbing trip reports, at least not from this Doctor. In any case, when discussing routes, names and numbers often come into play. The Doctor tries not to come off sounding too proud of himself for climbing at a certain level (and he knows just how un-special he is), but it would be silly to pretend that he doesn't climb harder than 5.10. In any case, DFA talks about all manner of shit on this here BBS; probably more about politics and social issues than climbing, and you certainly haven't shown up in (m)any of those discussions. If all you find of value to take in is alpine trip reports and sport-bashing, you're as stale as you accuse other folks of being. [ 10-07-2002, 12:51 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ]

Winter - what about vinyl for the home, CDs for the road? Sure, vinyl sounds warm and chunky at home, but recorded tapes, it must be admitted, do not sound as good as CDs. PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE top! [ 10-07-2002, 05:26 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ]

There are a couple of chubby marmots (is there any other kind?) up in Cocaine Gully, but they just sit back on the rocks and heckle you like those two old guys in the balcony on the Muppet Show as you plummet from the crux of Crack Babies for the nth time in a row. -
See, the Doctor was thinking that the carving or the parking lot memorial idea were good. But having too many remembrances dilutes some of the specialness of them.

Dr. Flash Amazing was thinking the same thing, but decided to keep his trouble-making mouth shut. Since your Canadianness has brought it up, though ...

Hey, there were no aluminum pole-with-plastic biner-holder devices when the Doctor first started cragging. It was all lumber and tape back then, just like Reinhold Messner did it on Annapurna. A good lesson, however, is to use a twig to prop the gate of the top biner open instead of tape, in case when you pull the stick loose it doesn't get all the tape and leaves the biner taped open. Had a friend pull this one; got up to the stick-clipped first bolt, was climbing past it, unhooked the taped-open draw from the bolt, and proceeded to go ass over tincups to the dirt. He got out with a sprained ankle. Had that happened on Vomit Launch, he would have wound up in the Crooked. [ 10-07-2002, 04:08 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ] -

While many have hoped, in a vain attempt to get intimate with DFA, that he's of the jelly-finger ilk, alas, it is not so. Better luck next time, old chap. As far as tunes go, the top choices are: Hot Water Music - 'No Division' Less Than Jake - 'Borders & Boundaries' Fugazi - 'The Argument' Tito Puente - 'Dance Mania' Avail - 'Over the James' Slow Gherkin - 'Shed Some Skin' NOFX - pick an album Rancid - pick an album Alkaline Trio - 'Maybe I'll Catch Fire' some reggae, maybe Culture or Bob Marley Otherwise, pretty much anything by the artists listed above, or any other various punk rock, ska, or reggae, and a smattering jazz, funk/soul, blues, hip-hop, acid jazz etc. No fucking techno, though. If the radio should, by some miracle, be on, it's probably tuned to NPR. [ 10-07-2002, 03:58 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ]

Them prefabbercated clipsticks are pure wankery. On the rare occasion that one must stick clip a bolt, a long stick (you know, wooden item, grows on trees), a few inches of tape, and a small twig should be employed. A "trad" stick-clip, if you will. -
As a rabid music consumer/snob and occasional rock climber, the Doctor has been wondering what y'all are listening to on the way to the crags. 5 or 10 albums you don't leave home without, or always get you psyched and seem to find their way into the CD spinner? Ho-hum; yeah, another boring survey-type thread. Forgive DFA, for he is sleepy and bored, and quickly lost interest in the intense controversy threads.
-
Yeah, but convenience is big, too. While building a small deck recently, the Doctor was quite thankful not to be dragging a cord all over the place. In fact, for any outside work, extension cords are a pain in the ass.

...wiping down your face, armpits, and naughty bits with baby wipes counts as a "bath." ...you're stoked when you get mac and cheese AND it's got tuna in it! ...you go to a movie on your rest day and fall asleep. ...you don't go to a movie unless there's a dollar theater around. -
"When the situation is hopeless, you've got nothing to worry about." - someone from The Monkeywrench Gang And don't delude yourself, there is something wrong with golf. Shit, everything is wrong with golf. Golf is just wrong. Also, if small children laugh at you, just kick them in the teeth when their parents aren't looking. Little bastards.

Another one: Check your rope once in a while. Couple years ago, DFA was out at Smith with the Misses. We had warmed up, then the Doctor went to put the draws up on the lady's project. The Doctor had the rope, and tied in while the Misses dug out the draws. DFA was absently messing with the rope a few feet from the sharp end, looking at some wear on the sheath. Upon bending the rope sharply at the wear spot, the Doctor was horrified to see the sheath split and the core spill out. This was astonishing, as the rope had been lead on using that end that very morning, and fortunately hadn't taken any falls. Fortunately, the rest of the rope was OK, but it was quite unnerving, to say the least.
-
Oh, all right. So much for stirring up some more shit ...
-
To wit; is the following funny or not?
-
Nah, just makin' conversation. Although DFA did see an opportunity to try and deflect some of the slag he gets for being a sporty.

Oops, sorry, Scott, but DFA is back at it. It's interesting that you a)posted a Red Meat comic strip, and b)picked the dead clown from the Red Meat comic strip as your avatar image. Are you a fan of the strip? DFA finds it positively hilarious. Red Meat has plenty of instances of child abuse, alcoholism (parent and child), dead clowns, drunk driving, animal misuse, abuse, and murder, and God knows how much other offensive material. All of it, however, is so over-the-top ridiculous, you can't help but laugh. So how is it that the instances of the kid getting locked in the basement or frequently psychologically abused by his dad are funny? Or any different from what the Doctor said?

There's nothing here that I disagree with too much... I just want to (choke!) agree with the sporty guy and db on tri-cams: cheap, light and bomber. If it makes you feel any better, Ted, the Doctor has climbed enough trad pitches and placed enough Tri-Cams to actually know that they're good shit. DFA started climbing in a small town with no gym, and didn't really think about sport vs. trad; it was all just climbing. The Doctor read Freedom of the Hills, Basic Rock Craft, and other climbing instruction books, and soaked up plenty of info about equalizing anchors, placing opposing pieces, placing gear in flares, tying off pitons, and shit like that. Not that he remembers all of it, and not that he climbs trad routes much, but he's not such a sporty that he's totally oblivious to climbing's other technical aspects.
