That's weak, dude. Making fun of somebody for doing something that they take personal satisfaction in just makes you look small, not them. Sure, I'm not personally a fan of hauling tons of shit up something, but I'd rather see a couple of folks having fun doing that than feeling they aren't good enough for somebody else's standards. My friend guided a group of breast cancer survivors up mount baker this summer. As a guided climb they obviously took lots of stuff and went slow. I bet summiting Baker meant the world to some of them. I know where you you're coming from, cause I've been quick to toss shit about how other people have been doing stuff, even if in jest. I just try to remind myself that if they aren't doing me harm, then their reason for being there is just as good to them as my reason is to me.

it has nothing to do with defending getting anyones guy elected, it's a matter of the 12th amendment in that pesky US constitution that many seem to hold so dear, whether or not it gets their guy elected. it's not an issue of bias. nice try tho... Yes, cause the country is exactly like it was when the 12th amendment was added. Times change. The fact is we are a nation now, not a grouping of states. It should be up to the PEOPLE to elect our president not the STATES.
-
Well said, Jim. Lars, it's easy to understand. Look at the 2000 election. 500,000 people had their votes dismissed by 127 (or whatever the hell it was) in Florida. Why should half a million people's vote get essentially nullified by a few poeple in one close state? One person...one vote...no matter what state. Popular vote is way more fair. If you want to defend the electoral college simply because it got your guy elected (well...that and some tampering) in 2000, than at least fess up and admit your bias.
-
The electoral college needs to go. The fact that a few people in a small state can have more influence than millions in a populated state is silly.

[TR] The Triad- East Ridge to Middle (Main) Summit 9/6/2004

Yeah, unless there is something the picture doesn't show real well, that looks a hellavu lot easier. -
In my mind, this is cyclical and not something we can change... Dude: You're hardcore! Even Bush's scientists admit we're causing climate change and CAN change it. I'm not sure this is a "great issue" for climbing in particular, though. I do think this is a big issue for climbing. It's also an issue for winter backcountry pursuits, which some of us value equally. I mourn when I see evidence of recently receeded glacier ice and bare rock in late season where there has always been snow or ice previously. The evidence in Colorado is even worse. Check out this pathetic little piece of snow they call a glacier here: http://hikingincolorado.org/images/stmary_12b.jpg Ouch!

[TR] Glacier Peak- Diasapoinment Peak and several glaciers 9/7/2004
JoshK replied to gearho's topic in North Cascades
There is still a very reasonable approach if you are going to the south side of the mountain, as they did. The big difference between this area and the pickets is the terrain is so much easier. -
Oh god, how terrible. I dont know Frank personally but just the fact that I recognize him as a frequent poster and that I have probably had converstaions with him online make this even more sad.
-
That "small" glacier is probably bigger than any of the so-called glaciers here in Colorado.

I agree, I think it's a horrible misuse to use it for birth control. Despite this, it isn't my decision, your decision, or anybody elses except for the mother.
-
THe difference between a 6-month-old and a fetus which is still a part of the mother is pretty fucking big, cracked. That has to be one of the stupidest analogies I've seen in a while. Until that child is a seperate life (meaning *outside* of the mother...I don't care about anybody's religious definition) it is part of her body, and it's up to her to decide how to handle it. The very thinking that somehow we should be able to tell her what to do is simplistic and ignorant.
-
I think he is probably more against shitheads like you deciding what is right for a woman to do with her own body.
-
My stupid referred more to hauling a bunch of weight up for a few hundred feet of lousy turns. Sorry, but I just don't get the TAY thing. Skiing, at least to me, is about having fun, not having to do something to hit a schedule or whatever. Ironically, Paradise would at least afford one a reasonbly lengthy run, rather than a small snow patch.
-
I know it's not PC to critisize, but hauling your skis up Ruby mountain for that shit is pretty dumb.
-
How the hell is he spraying? He mearly pointed out he had done the same thing before.
-
no schrund is impassible... That said, it was even quite broken in April when we climbed most of it.
-
just get a decent photo printer for $40, print in 8.5x11 (or 14) and splice things together if you need a bigger map. Then spray it. Printing on 11x17 or 13x19 is a waste of money when you can do the same thing with a printer a fraction of the cost.

Just facts here. Debate as you like... I just sincerely hope that those of you who vote repub do so for reasons other than economic. Current Unemployment is 5.5% July new jobs report was 32,000 Forecast was about 250,000 U.S. Labor Market Overview U.S. population is roughly 294,000,000 U.S. Labor force is roughly half of the population, or about 140,000,000 U.S. population and labor force grows about 1% annually 1.4 million new people enter the labor force annually, roughly 120,000 a month George Bush II Track Record Between Jan, 01 and July, 04 the economy has lost 1.2 million jobs 1st president since Hoover (1929-1933) to lose job during 4-year term If labor force participation was same as March, '01 unemployment rate would be 7.3% Bill Clinton Overview Average job growth monthly was 225,000 Added ~11,000,000 jobs 6.8% -> 4.0% unemployment rate drop Contrast between Dems and Repubs in 4-year terms since LBJ Dems 10.1% job growth during terms Repubs 4% job growth during terms Reagan was 6.8% Clinton was 9.1% Nature of today's new jobs Tend to be lower paying than jobs lost Since Jan, 2004 Bottom fifth employers in wage & salary have added 477,000 Walmart, etc. Top fifth of wages and salaries has added no net jobs 57% of people who lose jobs find a lower paying job Market for college grads is increasing but lowering for high school grads. Mostly meaning that college degrees are now useful to get even low paying jobs Average hourly wage over last 4 years is up 8% which doesn't even beat inflation Essential living expenses over past 4 years Health care premiums up 49% College tuition up 40% National property tax up 30% Gas prices up 23% Partially offset by lower taxes and lower interest rates, but not nearly enough

I just happened to turn on the TV a few minutes ago and on CNN Bush was speaking about intelligence director or something like that. He was actually making sense, to give credit where credit is due. Then the interview starts to rap up and it goes something like this... (slightly paraphrased) reporter "mr. president, are you going to athens?" bush "Athens, texas??" reporter "greece" bush "oh greece. no, I dont plan to" reporter "what is your favorite moment so far of the olympics?" bush "Uhh.........Hmm.........Huh, there are lots of them.......let's see.....Iraqi soccer........I liked the Afghani woman holding the flag. Our gymnasts are great, the swimming, lots of great stuff." I am not sure how the reporters didn't crack up at the "Athens, Texas"? part...

I'm sure the water (for power) and other resources wasted by Las Vegas for casino lights, etc. dwarf the water used by households or fountains. the sad fact is LA, LV and Phoenix (among many others) were stupid ass places to build cities. Unfortunately we all have to deal with them now. I'd support turning LA into a nuclear weapon testing ground.
-
Ironically a great deal of benifits and pay reduction has come down from the Bush whitehouse. Meanwhile these poor folks are shipped around to fight a war with a poorly defined objective and have their deployments extended.
-
Not to be a dick, but the listed climbs would definiltely be beginner. They are workouts and fun, but certainly not technically challenging or committing.

I think you make a turn onto the chocolate highway and go right up that.
