  1. ...the heat? I love sun as much as everybody else. but the heat is pretty miserable around the house, and just terrible for long, tiring approaches.
  2. If I go back, I'll definitely do that. When confronted with the decision it was hard to deny that the direct "variation" looked like the obvious natural line. A traverse around something always seems like a blemish, but, hey, whatever, you are right...that is the whole point of that route.
  3. Nice job guys! Seriously, Tom, I hardly recognized you without the beard!
  4. WOw, that is very cool. Some day I will tackle something like that.
  5. I have a vintage Sherman tank. Unforunately the cannon is currently busted, but it still rides good. Should I pick you up in Chilliwack?
  6. Yup, that's what I was guessing. I'll keep this in mind and avoid getting hurt anywhere but low elevation areas on cold days in the winter.
  7. Nice job guys! Glad you got to put your plan into action, Wayne!

    Here We Go Again...

Scrawny and heavily makeuped is more like it...
  10. I just recently bought a serratus genie from pro mountain sports. I love the thing. I modified it by cutting a blue foam pad and doubling it up for a back support/bivy pad. It gives the pack mcuh more form. The long size is actually pretty big. I used it the last couple days and easily fit rope, bivy gear, etc in it.
  11. LOL freeman, why does the hot weather affect the rescue? Updrafts? lighter air?
  12. Ivan and I did this a couple of days ago too. We also did the direct variation. That move getting from the slung-block belay onto the crack fucking stumped me. It was altogether probably my most pathetic alpine flail ever. I don't know what about it I couldn't get but I ended up falling a couple times while seconding. I was such a tired pussy after that I prusiked up into the crack. In any event, it was pretty fun I thought, all and all. It's really close to home most of all. Some of the scrambling above the large ramp was actually pretty fun too.

  16. Now I must say this is one of the stupidest arguments we've had on here. kerry's first quote is what he would have done IF HE WAS PRESIDENT. It's very different than being nothing more than a shocked bystander like the rest of us. When I heard I was also shocked and at a lack of words for 40 minutes. That in no ways means if I had an immediate and urgent job to attend to I wouldn't have got up and been able to do it. Your argument is pretty weak here man.
  17. come to think about it, it's more of a blemish on humankind. then again, so was the whole war in reality. it is one huge big question for the ages. I am certainly not one of those people that thinks dropping it was absolutely horrific. I'll be honest, if I knew for certain that it was the only way to end the war sooner and it killing 200,000 japanese saved 200,000 american lives then as harsh as it sounds, it was the right decision. It's horrible thinking about it as numbers, since many of those civilians had no choice, but they were the ones who started it, so to speak.

    Kerry in Vietnam

In any event, I don't see how we can say he is a lying non-hero any more than he is a huge hero. None of us were there and obviously most anybody, his supporters or detractors, has their own agenda too.

    Kerry in Vietnam

The numbers are still down quite a bit from when he took office. Latest numbers for this month (or quarter, whichever it is) also showed a sharp decline in growth. bad for jobseekers, good for getting him gone. I really don't think it's for us to judge if they are false or not. Give me a break, everone on his boat says he is a hero, and other random people says he is not. should we go back and check everybody recipient of the silver star and make sure they *really* deserved it? I would take anyother vietnam vet at his word.
  20. I actually read that as "the first 270 pages are so good they could have been a book on their own, but the entire thing makes it epic.
  21. yeah, reviews are the official word On the opposite take, my history prof,a PHd in 20th century american history thinks very highly of it. My grandfather served in teh pafific as well. guadal canal is the most famous battle I recall that he was in. I guess my point is really that whether it ended up stopping the war sooner or not, it's not the event I would choose to bring up in rememberence. I, like any of us, cannot judge whether it was the right situation while sitting here 60 years later, but the fact remains it is somewhat of a blemish on our country's history.

    Kerry in Vietnam

Kerry never called himself a hero. I just dont get how you guys can critisze the man for trumpeting his achievments. That's like saying george bush shouldn't be talking up his job growth while president. oh yeah, wait, that didn't happen. well whatever positive he thinks he has done.
  23. Not so straight forward. Lots of evidence points to very serious surrender talks within the japanese upper ranks. like anything in history, it can be debated to no end. who knows what would have happened: Check this out, I haven't read all of it, but the parts I have were very good: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684813785/qid=1091833264/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-6205257-6743065
  24. Funny, but last time I checked it wasn't Kerry's job on 9/11 to respond to a national disaster.
  25. I dont think the NAACP is an advocate of advancing their own race at the expense of others. I think that is the difference. also, working for equal rights is a far cry from working for racial supremacy
